West Acres Shopping Center is a regional shopping mall located in Fargo, North Dakota near the intersection of Interstate 29 and 94. It is the largest mall in North Dakota. The anchor stores are JCPenney, Macy's, Forever 21, and Best Buy. Von Maur announced plans to open a location in a spot that was once occupied by Herberger's, [2] filling all anchor spots.

It also includes nearly 130 stores and services, a 750-seat food court, and The District, a collection of indoor & outdoor restaurants. The mall is also home to The Roger Maris Museum, a collection of regional art including the Aptitude Art Studio, the Touchstone Energy Dinosaur Playland, and a number of spearfishing decoys created by John Jensen.

History

West Acres Shopping Center was developed in August 1972 by William A. Schlossman along with several other investors. Upon opening, the mall featured Dayton's, Sears, and Fargo-based DeLendrecie's — relocating from its earlier downtown location. [3] The Dayton's store was the first outside the state of Minnesota. [4] A 1979 expansion added JCPenney as a fourth anchor. DeLendrecie's became Herberger's in 1998, and a food court was added in 2000. The Dayton's store was re-branded Marshall Field's in 2001, and Macy's in 2006.

In December 2012, the mall reached full occupancy. Since then, some national stores including Justice and Gap Kids have closed, but were replaced by new stores like Ragstock, Sephora, Boot Barn, Lululemon and Athleta. Sears closed their location at the mall in 2017. [5] In 2018, Bon-Ton owned Herberger's announced plans to shutter their anchor location [6] and filed for bankruptcy. Additionally, Best Buy relocated from a mall outlet to the former Sears space. [7] The former Best Buy space was filled by Boot Barn, Guitar Center and Foss Swim School. [8] To fill the unused remaining space in the former Sears, the mall announced plans for The District, a multimillion-dollar development featuring numerous restaurants with indoor and outdoor seating. It is currently in phase 1 of a multi phase project. [9] The first restaurant, Crave American Kitchen & Sushi Bar, opened in late 2019. [10] In January 2022, it was announced that the West Acres mall owners purchased the vacant Herberger's building that was once owned by Bon-Ton at an auction. West Acres owners announced plans to redevelop the property. [11]

An original centerpiece within the mall is the Fountain of Abundance, created and refurbished by Minnesota State University Moorhead art professor, P. Richard Szeitz. The fountain was originally located in front of Dayton's and was later moved to the JCPenney front entrance in 2001 during the construction of the food court.

Other featured artists whose work can be found in the mall include Marjorie Schlossman, Black Pinto Horse (Monte Yellow Bird), Walter Piehl, Star Wallowing Bull, Dan Jones, Robert Crowe, Carl Oltvelt, Ellen Deidrich, Brad Bachmeier, and Alfred Dacoteau. In 2007, West Acres was named the Business Art's Advocate by the Lake Agassiz Arts Council. [12]

On April 10, 2019, At Home announced plans to open in the former Herberger's, [13] but it never came to fruition. May of 2023, Von Maur [14] announced the opening of a 90,000 SF location, opening Spring of 2025

Salem Mall was a shopping mall in Trotwood, Ohio, a suburb of Dayton, Ohio, United States. It was built in 1966 by The Rouse Company and originally featured Rike's and Sears as its main anchor stores. Expansion in 1981 added a new wing of stores and JCPenney, while further renovations in that same decade included a food court. Rike's was later dual-branded as Shillito-Rike's and then renamed to Lazarus The mall began to lose stores throughout the 1990s, including both Lazarus and JCPenney, the former of which was torn down for The Home Depot. After an extended period of decline, the mall closed in 2005 and was demolished in 2006. Sears, which was excluded from the demolition, remained operational until it closed in 2013. In 2022, it was announced that a large portion of the mall would become the new site of The Funk Music Hall of Fame and Exhibition Center.

Charlestowne Mall was a shopping mall located in St. Charles, Illinois, United States. It was the second mall to serve the city after St. Charles Mall. Built by Wilmorite Properties, Charlestowne Mall opened for business in April 1991. Its original anchor stores were Kohl's, JCPenney, Sears, and Carson's. Regal Cinemas added a movie theater in 1999 which was sold to Classic Cinemas two years later, while JCPenney closed in 2000 and was converted in 2001 to Von Maur. The mall began experiencing a decline in tenancy in the 21st century due to its size, its location, and the opening of Geneva Commons in Geneva, Illinois in 2002. Although Wilmorite sold most of its shopping malls to Macerich in 2005, Charlestowne Mall was not included in the sale; it then changed ownership multiple times, with many of the following owners announcing plans to renovate it. None of these plans were executed, and many stores closed over time, including Sears in 2011 and Kohl's in 2016. The mall was entirely closed in 2017 except for the movie theater, Von Maur, and Carson's, which itself closed a year later. The vacant mall is owned by Urban Street Group.

Quail Springs Mall is a super-regional shopping mall and trade area located in far northern Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, which opened on October 23, 1980. It contains three major department store anchors, a 24-screen AMC Theatre, Round One Entertainment, Blue Zoo Aquarium, and a total of 111 tenants comprising a total of approximately 1,115,000 square feet of gross leasable area. The mall is the focal point of a large area of recent residential and commercial development, and is located very close to one of Oklahoma City's most notoriously congested and difficult intersections which includes West Memorial Road, North Pennsylvania Avenue and The Kilpatrick Turnpike.
