Marching band
The band has performed in many local, regional and national events including the Bands of America Grand Nationals many times. The band was chosen to represent the state by marching in the 2005 Inaugural Parade honoring President George W. Bush. In November 2008, the band participated in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade where they were the first to use props. This 2012–2013 school year, the band has been invited by the Lord Mayer to perform in London's New Years Day parade.
On March 23, 2010, police arrested Mitchell Lance Britt, former band director at West Johnston High School, for 3 counts of felony sexual offense involving a student and one count sexually exploiting a minor. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has been asked to assist because he has been accused on several incidents of happenings on band trips in other states. Britt was suspected of having sexual relations with multiple students in his home. Federal agents have said they found videos of Britt and another student that are sexual in nature involving nudity. Britt resigned in November 2009, and was living in Pennsylvania looking for other school jobs at the time of his arrest. [3]
Britt pleaded guilty to sex crimes charges involving 2 students in April 2012. He pleaded guilty under an Alford plea. He received 45 days in jail. [4]
Music from the New World for a New Era (2002)
The first marching band group was established in the fall of 2002 when the high school opened. The majority of members at this time came from other schools, such as South Johnston High School. The marching band competed in its first Bands of America Regional Competition in New York.

The Inner Compass (2008)
The Inner Compass was a show based on an individual's decisions made based on their inner compass. The drill depicted many images of compasses pointing west (a play on the high school's name). All the music for this show was composed from the Broadway Musical/movie West Side Story . During this season, West traveled to Maryland to compete in the Towson Regional, where they were awarded Grand Champion. [5] Rather than traveling to Grand Nationals after an undefeated season, the band traveled to NYC in November to perform in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, [6] where they performed their show Boogie Wonderland to the music of Earth, Wind & Fire.
Winter Guard
The winter guard at WJHS is another extracurricular activity. They have performed in many local, regional, and national competitions, with both WGI and AIA. The winter guard is split into varsity and junior varsity. The varsity guard has been in the Scholastic World Class division of Winter guard since 2010, and therefore is commonly known within the school as the "World Guard". For a similar reason, the junior varsity group is commonly known as the "A Guard".
Both of these groups have performed excellent shows. [7] [8] In 2008, the Open guard placed 2nd and the A guard placed 7th at the Atlantic Power Regional. [9] The Open guard went on to compete in the WGI World Championships, placing 6th in finals. [10]
In 2009, Wind was formed. Wind (a shortening of "west independent") is composed of West Johnston alumni and friends. At the 2009 WGI World Championships in Dayton, Ohio, they placed 9th in finals with a score of 87.4. [11]
On April 10, 2010, the Open Guard was named 2010 WGI World Championships Scholastic Open Class Champions with a score of 97.05 and was awarded the Gold Medal. [12] This is West Johnston's second WGI medal—in 2004, the Guard (then in A Class) scored 95.6 in the Scholastic A Class Finals and was awarded the Silver medal. [13]
Winter Guard International (WGI) is an American governing body that sanctions championship events for three competitive performing arts activities: color guard, percussion ensembles, and indoor marching bands. WGI was founded in 1977 in response to inconsistent adjudication and rules of competition which made it difficult for color guards to compete nationally. Today, WGI publishes and maintains an adjudication handbook, with an accompanying "Rules & Regulations", that has been widely adopted.
Senator Ruben S. Ayala Senior High School, often abbreviated as Ayala High School or AHS, is located in Chino Hills, California. It is one of the four comprehensive high schools in the Chino Valley Unified School District. The school was established in 1990 and named after California state senator Ruben S. Ayala. It received the 2011 California Distinguished School award and the 2015 California Gold Ribbon School Award.
Cicero–North Syracuse High School is an American public high school located in Cicero, New York, United States serving tenth through twelfth grade students. The school is part of the North Syracuse Central School District.
West Bloomfield High School is a public high school in West Bloomfield, Michigan. The school is the only public high school in the West Bloomfield School District. The School Enrollment for the 2010-2011 school year is about 1900. West Bloomfield High School was previously located in the Abbott Middle School building, which opened on January 31, 1955 with an enrollment of 406. From fall 1968 through spring 1971, the school was temporarily located at the site of the current West Bloomfield Middle School. The current building was built in 1971. West Bloomfield High School has begun to offer the Advanced Placement International Diploma to the classes of 2011 and beyond. In addition, it established additional Advanced Placement courses starting the 2010-2011 school year.
Winter guard is an indoor color guard sport and performance art derived from military ceremonies. Modern winter guard is a competitive, performance-based activity which incorporates choreographed staging, dance, and manipulation of equipment such as flags and prop rifles and sabers. Unlike traditional color guard, winter guard performances and contests are held indoors, usually in a gymnasium or an indoor arena. Performances typically last three to seven minutes and are generally accompanied by recorded soundtracks rather than live music. However, the use of live instrumentation and vocalization have grown in popularity. Winter guard is most present in the United States; independent units have also been formed in Canada, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Japan. Winter guard ensembles often perform at judged competitions officiated by local and regional associations using criteria developed by Winter Guard International, host of the annual Winter Guard International World Championships in Dayton, Ohio. The World Championships event purportedly attracts in 60,000 visitors to the event annually. Scoring attempts to rank units on the repertoire and achievement of aspects of each performance such as unity, quality, range, precision, skill, design, and effect.
Trumbull High School is a large public high school located in Trumbull, Connecticut. The current principal is Todd Manuel.
Mineola High School is a public high school in the Mineola Union Free School District and is located in Garden City Park, New York. It serves Mineola, as well as certain parts of Albertson, Williston Park, Garden City Park, and Roslyn Heights.
Archbishop Alter High School, also known as Alter High School, is a Catholic high school in Kettering, Ohio, United States. It is operated by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cincinnati and is named after Archbishop Karl Joseph Alter.
Choctawhatchee High School is a high school in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. It is the only school in Okaloosa County to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. It also offers the Advanced Placement Program and honors classes, AFJROTC, a dual-enrollment aviation program offered by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and pre-engineering classes. Choctaw has received Florida's highest rating of A+ for many years.
Lincoln High School is a high school in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Enrollment is currently at 1,833 students. Lincoln was included in the list of the top 1200 public schools in the US by Newsweek in their May 8, 2006 issue, ranking at 1,027.
Central Crossing High School is a high school in Grove City, Ohio. It is one of four high schools in the South-Western City Schools district, the others being Franklin Heights High School, Grove City High School, and Westland High School.
Mechanicsburg Area Senior High School is a secondary school located on 500 South Broad Street in the borough of Mechanicsburg, west of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The school is part of the Mechanicsburg Area School District.
Cullman High School is the only public high school in the city of Cullman, Alabama as well as the largest high school in Cullman County, Alabama. The school is classified as a 6A school and belongs to the Cullman City School District.
Laguna Creek High School is a public high school located in Elk Grove, California, a suburban community near Sacramento, California established in 1994 as the fourth high school in Elk Grove. Laguna Creek is the only school in the Elk Grove Unified School district that offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme. Other programs that the school contains are Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), Associated Student Body (ASB), Link Crew, Career Technical Education academies (CTE), athletics, and other extracurriculars.

Muscle Shoals High School (MSHS),is the sole public secondary education institution in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. MSHS has been awarded the Blue Ribbon Lighthouse Award for Excellence.
Dripping Springs High School is a comprehensive public high school in Dripping Springs, TX, located in Hays County, Texas. The only high school in the Dripping Springs Independent School District, it contains grades 9, 10, 11, and 12. Its enrollment is approximately 1,800. The principal is Angela Gamez, who was appointed in 2019.
Homewood High School (HHS) is a public high school, serving grades 9-12, in the Homewood, Alabama suburb of Birmingham. It is the only high school in the Homewood City School System. The principal is Joel Henneke. In the summer of 2007, the front of the school was remodeled, and a new building, Pathways Alternative School, was constructed in the upper level of the student parking lot. The front office and lobby were also remodeled in the summer of 2008. In the summer of 2018, construction on a new fine arts wing began.
