Westpointe is a neighborhood occupying the northwest portions of Salt Lake City, Utah. Westpointe includes the neighborhoods immediately adjacent to the Salt Lake City International Airport, and includes Salt Lake City's newly constructed Regional Athletic Complex, the Jordan River Off-Highway Vehicle State Recreation Area, and several parks and schools. Boundaries

The Westpointe community encompasses a large land area, including the Salt Lake City International Airport and Salt Lake City International Center, while containing a relatively small residential area. It is defined as west from Redwood Road extending to the western city limits, north of 700 North, extending north to city limits (Davis County, the Great Salt Lake and the Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area.) [2]

Westpointe lies north of the Jordan Meadows Community and Poplar Grove neighborhoods and west of the Rose Park neighborhoods. The area is often portrayed in the media as part of Rose Park, in fact the entire urban area west of I-15, is often referred to as Rose Park despite its actual boundaries being relatively small.[ citation needed ]

The entire neighborhood falls within the boundary of West High School, one of Utah's largest and the oldest high schools. [2] [4]

Education

The Westpointe neighborhood lies within the Salt Lake City School District and contains two elementary schools: North Star Elementary and Escalante Elementary. Northwest Middle School is also located in Westpointe. Westpointe is home to the Salt Lake Community College Westpointe Campus. In 2014, SLCC received permission from the State of Utah to acquire nearby land parcels for development of a 121,000 gross square feet (GSF) technical education facility for high demand trades; by July 2015, the College had purchased seven parcels totaling 19.61 acres in the Westpointe Center Business Park. History

Much of the area was primarily agricultural prior to development in the 1980s, 90s, and early 2000s[ citation needed ]

Crime

For the last several decades, Westpointe has suffered from ambiguity regarding crime in the areas of Poplar Grove, Rose Park, and Glendale, despite being one of the lowest crime areas of the city.[ citation needed ] Crime reports are published online by the Salt Lake City Police Department (http://www.slcpd.com/ass3ts/uploads/2020/04/2019-Annual-Report-FinalWeb.pdf). Recent reports for calendar year 2019 show that Westpointe has a below-average crime rate.

Culture

The neighborhood is one of the most religiously and ethnically diverse areas of Utah.[ citation needed ]

Community

The neighborhood benefits from an active community council. The Westpointe Community Council is made up of an elected body of volunteers who serve the interests of Westpointe and the community. The purpose of this council is to provide community input and information to various city departments. Community councils are encouraged to make recommendations to the city on all matters affecting the city or each organization's particular community or neighborhood. Westpointe Community Council Meetings are held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 6:30-8pm at The City Library's Day-Riverside Branch (1575 W 1000 N, Salt Lake City, UT 84116)

The Avenues is an affluent neighborhood in Salt Lake City, Utah. It is named after the perfectly gridlike, closely laid out roads called Avenues and Streets. First surveyed in the 1850s, the Avenues became Salt Lake City's first neighborhood. Today, the Avenues neighborhood is generally considered younger, more progressive, and somewhat "artsy" when compared to other neighborhoods. Many young professionals choose to live there due to the culture and easy commute to downtown.. It is also one of the most important strongholds of the Utah Democratic Party.

Rose Park is a neighborhood located in the northwest area of Salt Lake City, Utah and is among the most ethnically diverse areas in Utah. Its name comes from the area's original developer, who arranged part of the area's streets in the shape of several roses, with one of its main streets, American Beauty Drive, acting as a long rose stem. This area's original roof shingles were red or green and its street names all feature rose varieties. Rose Park residents enjoy a very short commute to downtown and many recreational amenities.

The Salt Lake City School District (SLCSD) is the oldest public school district in Utah. Boundaries for the district are identical to the city limits for Salt Lake City. Employing about 1,300 teachers who instruct about 25,000 students K-12, the district is the ninth largest in the state, as of 2009, behind Granite, Davis, Alpine, Jordan, Canyons, Weber, Nebo, and Washington. Two of the district's high schools, East and West, are over 100 years old.

Sharpstown is a master-planned community in the Southwest Management District, Southwest Houston, Texas. It was one of the first communities to be built as a master-planned, automobile centered community and the first in Houston. Frank Sharp (1906–1993), the developer of the subdivision, made provisions not only for homes but also for schools, shopping and recreation areas. While this model has been duplicated countless times in the past fifty years, at the time it was quite revolutionary, attracting national media attention. The development was dedicated on March 13, 1955.

Glendale is a neighborhood on the West side of Salt Lake City, Utah. Glendale is South of the Rose Park, Fair Park, and Poplar Grove neighborhoods. The neighborhood was originally developed as Glendale Gardens which is where Glendale Middle School derives its name. Mountain View Elementary was originally named Glendale Elementary. Glendale, and neighboring Poplar Grove, Fair Park, & Rose Park enjoy a vibrant multi ethnic environment. Residents of Glendale enjoy the community's diversity, friendliness, pride in community, and authenticity of fellow residents. Those who live in Glendale also cite it as affordable, and conveniently close to local schools, parks, the airport, and downtown Salt Lake City.

Poplar Grove is a western neighborhood of Salt Lake City, Utah. It lies north of Glendale and south of Rose Park & Fair Park. It is the second largest neighborhood in Salt Lake City and is often confused with Glendale.

Poplar is a neighborhood in Lower North Philadelphia. It is located north of Callowhill, between Spring Garden/Fairmount and Northern Liberties, bounded roughly by Girard Avenue to the north, North Broad Street to the west, Spring Garden Street to the south, and 5th Street to the east. The neighborhood is mostly residential with commercial frontage on Broad Street and Girard Avenue and some industrial facilities to the west of the railroad tracks along Percy St. and 9th St.

Fairpark is a western neighborhood of Salt Lake City, Utah. It lies north of Poplar Grove and south of Rose Park. It is one of the smaller neighborhoods in Salt Lake and is often confused with Rose Park. On the east it is bordered by 500 West and extends west to 1460 West, then following the Jordan River to 700 North, the boundary then curves down to 600 North back to 500 West. On its south, Fairpark is bordered by North Temple which features the iconic restaurant, Red Iguana. This area is rich with diversity, and growing as the city expands west. The neighborhood includes smaller community areas including Guadalupe, Jackson, and Onequa. It has one public school, Mary W. Jackson elementary school. The neighborhood is named after the State Fairpark, which takes up a large portion of the area.
