What Do You Say is the first single from industrial rock band Filter's sixth studio album The Sun Comes Out Tonight . The track was first released on April 2, 2013, and peaked at no. 15 on the Billboard Active Rock charts.

Background

The song was written and recorded by Filter frontman Richard Patrick, guitarist Jonathan Radke, and producer Bob Marlette in Los Angeles at Blue Room studios. [1]

The song was first released as a single on April 2, 2013, two months before its respective album, The Sun Comes Out Tonight , was released on June 4, 2013. [2] The song received two music videos; one a "lyrics video" on April 28, 2013, [3] and one an actual music video, release at the same time of the album's release. [4]

Sound and composition

"What Do You Say" is typically classified as industrial rock, [5] containing heavy, distorted, electric guitar, [5] and aggressive, distorted vocals". [6] The album's drumming consists entirely of a programmed drum machine, not a live drummer. [7] The song maintains a verse–chorus form with an alternating quiet to loud dynamic. [7] Lyrically, the track focuses on Patrick's perception that no one is listening to his frustrations with the world around him. [8] [9] He states "it’s about how everyone’s screaming at each other and not listening." [10]

Reception

The song has been relatively well received. Commercially, it is Filter's first song to chart since 2008's "Soldiers of Misfortune", and the highest-charting song since 2002's "Where Do We Go From Here?". Music critics praised the song. Several critics compared it favorably to their 1995 hit "Hey Man, Nice Shot". [11] [12] [7] Hit the Floor praised the song for "exercising an enthusiastic stomp. When Patrick steps up to bellow the first choruses, eyebrows raise...this is actually good, head-nodding rock music, produced to a high standard. [13] San Francisco Media praised Radke's guitar-work on the track and stated that the song "...just throws a mean right hook and reeks of awesomeness, tipping a nod to the Filter sound of old with something magical going on." [14] Revolver stated that the track was especially effective when its energy and angst was contrasted with some of the album's slower, softer songs, such as "Surprise". [15] Broken Records Magazine supported the track's choice as a single citing that the chorus sounds like it was "tailor-made to be sung by the audience live." [16] Blabbermouth strongly praised the song as well, stating that "the throbbing pulse of "What Do You Say"...deserve[s] FM love" due to being "chocked full of rallying "whoa-oh" calls, cruise-minded pound rhythms and singular guitar shoves", ultimately concluding that it was "of Richard Patrick's most poised vehicles in quite some time". Katatonia Swedish metal band

Katatonia are a Swedish heavy metal band formed in Stockholm in 1991 by Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström. The band started as a studio-only project for the duo, as an outlet for the band's love of death metal. Increasing popularity led them to add more band members for live performances, though outside of the band's founders, the lineup was a constantly changing, revolving door of musicians throughout the 1990s, notably including Mikael Åkerfeldt of the band Opeth for a period. His stage name was bestowed on him in 1998 when he left David Lee Roth's solo band and joined the rock group Marilyn Manson as their guitarist, taking over for Zim Zum. Army of Anyone was a rock supergroup formed by Filter frontman Richard Patrick with two members of rock band Stone Temple Pilots. In addition to Patrick on vocals, the band featured brothers Dean DeLeo and Robert DeLeo, and Ray Luzier, formerly of David Lee Roth's band, on drums. The band released one self-titled album in November 2006, which was well-received, but sold well short of the members' multi-platinum selling releases of their other bands, even despite the success of their first single, "Goodbye", which peaked at number 3 on the US Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart. After releasing a second charting single, "Father Figure", and touring in support of the album, the band went into hiatus in mid-2007, with members returning to their respective bands, except Luzier, who joined Korn. Despite being relatively inactive since 2007, all members have stayed in contact, and have independently shown interest in working on a second album if the logistics and scheduling of their commitments to other bands ever aligned.

Filter is an American rock band formed in 1993 in Cleveland, Ohio, by singer Richard Patrick and guitarist and programmer Brian Liesegang. The band was formed when Patrick desired to start his own band after leaving Nine Inch Nails as their touring guitarist. Their debut album Short Bus was released in 1995 and ended up going platinum, largely due to the success of the single "Hey Man Nice Shot". After the album, the band would go through the first of many lineup changes, leaving Patrick as the only consistent member across all releases.
