Wilbur Lin (Chinese: 林韡函) is a Taiwanese–American conductor best known for his work with orchestras and operas in the United States and Taiwan. As of 2023, he is the music director of the Missouri Symphony in Columbia, Missouri, Music Director of the Denver Young Artists Orchestra, and assistant conductor of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. [1] Previously, he was assistant conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and a professor at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois. Lin was born in New Jersey and moved to Taiwan at age six. In 2008, while attending National Taiwan Normal University, he founded the Chamber Philharmonic Taipei. Lin has conducted ensembles in Europe, Latin America, East Asia, and the United States, including the Taipei Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Ballet, Manchester Camerata, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, and Richmond Symphony Orchestra of Indiana.
Born in New Jersey, United States, Wilbur Lin moved to Taiwan at age six with his parents. [2] [3] His father was an amateur choir conductor. [3] Lin has credited the musical environment at churches he attended with influencing his career choice. [2] He was a boy soprano and began playing piano at age six. [2]
Lin went on to study piano and harpsichord at the National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei, receiving his undergraduate degree in 2011. [4] At school he would study with Apo Hsu, who was formerly music director of the Springfield Symphony in Springfield, Missouri-the same U.S state as the Missouri Symphony Lin would later lead. In 2013, Lin received a master of music degree in conducting from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, United Kingdom. He holds a doctoral degree in orchestral conducting from Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music, where he studied with David Effron and Arthur Fagen. His dissertation is titled: Performing Bach Cantatas with Modern Orchestras: A Modern Conductor's Handbook for Applying Historically Informed Practice to Today's Ensembles. [5] Lin has been coached by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Mark Elder, and Helmuth Rilling and is a graduate of the Riccardo Muti's Italian Opera Academy in Ravenna, Italy.
In 2008, as an undergraduate student, Lin founded the Chamber Philharmonic Taipei. Originally composed of students, the orchestra became fully professional in 2013; he continues to conduct the ensemble as of 2022. Lin was employed as assistant conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra from 2019 to 2022. In 2022, he became an assistant professor at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois, where he directs the University Philharmonic and Opera Theatre.
Lin becomes the third music director of the Missouri Symphony in Columbia, Missouri in 2023. [6] He is the third Taiwanese to lead a symphony orchestra in the United States. [7]
Johann Nikolaus Harnoncourt was an Austrian conductor, known for his historically informed performances. He specialized in music of the Baroque period, but later extended his repertoire to include Classical and early Romantic works. Among his best known recordings are those of Bach, whose 193 cantatas he recorded with Gustav Leonhardt.

The Portland Youth Philharmonic (PYP) is the oldest youth orchestra in the United States, established in 1924 as the Portland Junior Symphony (PJS). Now based in Portland, Oregon, the orchestra's origin dates back to 1910, when music teacher Mary V. Dodge began playing music for local children in Burns, Oregon. Dodge purchased instruments for the children and organized the orchestra, which would become known as the Sagebrush Symphony Orchestra. After touring the state, including a performance at the Oregon State Fair in Salem, the orchestra disbanded in 1918 when Dodge moved to Portland. There, Dodge opened a violin school and became music director of the Irvington School Orchestra.

David Eaton is an American composer and conductor who has been the music director of the New York City Symphony since 1985. Jeffrey Alan Kahane is an American classical concert pianist and conductor. Martin Pearlman is an American conductor, harpsichordist, composer, and early music specialist. He founded the first permanent Baroque orchestra in North America with Boston Baroque in 1973–74. Many of its original players went on to play in or direct other ensembles in what became a growing field in the American music scene. Prior to his move to Taiwan, he was the conductor and associate conductor of major American symphonies including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He contributed greatly to the refinement of the performances of classical music in Taiwan, leading local musicians to gain recognition overseas. There is a cultural center dedicated to him in Taipei.

Christiana Lin is a Chinese-Austrian pianist and harpsichordist. Since 1994 she has been a Steinway Artist. From 1978 to 1992, she studied in Vienna, Innsbruck and Munich and was conferred the Diplom Ausgezeichnet in piano performing from the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna, where she studied piano under Noel Flores, and composition with Erich Urbanner. She was also conferred the Diplom Ausgezeichnet in piano performing and Diplom in music education with additional Schwerpunkt in Cembalo (harpsichord) from the Tiroler Landeskonservatorium Innsbruck where she studied piano under Claude-France Journès, a renowned French-German pianist, and harpsichord under Michael Jaud, an Austrian harpsichordist and organist. For several times at the Mozarteum International Summer Academy in Salzburg, she studied piano with the American pianist, Leon Fleisher. She also has been to the Moscow Conservatory several times, studying with Monov and Natalie Trull.
Black conductors are musicians of African, Caribbean, African-American ancestry and other members of the African diaspora who are musical ensemble leaders who direct classical music performances, such as an orchestral or choral concerts, or jazz ensemble big band concerts by way of visible gestures with the hands, arms, face and head. Conductors of African descent are rare, as the vast majority are male and Caucasian.
The Missouri Symphony Orchestra is an American symphony orchestra based in Columbia, Missouri. Founded in 1970 as the Missouri Symphony Society the professional orchestra brings symphonic classics, pops, and guest artist to Mid-Missouri. The orchestra is best known for its "Hot Summer Nights" music series. Other annual events include the Symphony of Toys, Young People's Concert, and Joy of Music Summer camp. The Symphony also performs around Missouri including the Lake of the Ozarks.
