William Ross Norman Funnell (born 10 February 1966 in Ashford) is a top-class showjumper.

Career

Funnell has represented Britain internationally in many Nations Cup teams. [1] In 2006 he won the Hickstead Derby for the first time and won it again two years later in 2008 and again in 2009. In 2018 William became one of 5 riders to win The Hickstead Derby 4 times, joining Harvey Smith, John and Michael Whitaker, and Eddie Macken. [2] He also won the famous derby of La Baule in France in May 2011. [3]

Personal life

Funnell is married to eventer Pippa Funnell. He married her in October 1993 in Uckfield. [4] They live in Ockley in south Surrey where they have a stud farm to breed horses. [5] They became the first husband and wife to be inducted into The British Horse Society Equestrian Hall of Fame when William joined Pippa (2005) in being inducted in 2014. [6]

Boomerang, later Carroll's Boomerang, was an Irish-bred showjumping horse of the 1970s. He won the Hickstead Derby four years in a row, a record, and was one of the greatest of that or any decade. Boomerang also held the record for prize-money. Standing 16.2 hh, Boomerang was ridden in show jumping most successfully by Eddie Macken, as well as by Liz Edgar (Broome), Johan Heins and Paul Schockemöhle.

Ryan's Son (1968-1987) was a successful show jumping horse ridden by John Whitaker. He was a bay gelding and stood 16 hands. He was sired by a Thoroughbred called Ozymandias and born from an Irish Draught mare. In January 2007, Ryan's Son joined John Whitaker in being inducted into The British Horse Society Equestrian Hall of Fame.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Derby Bank</span>

The Hickstead Derby Bank known as the Derby Bank is an infamous jump at the All England Jumping Course at Hickstead that is part of the course for the British Jumping Derby. The jump has 3 ft 5 in (1.04 m) rails on top, the smallest on the course, and then 16 ft (4.9 m) horizontal flat before a 10 ft 6 in (3.20 m) slope down the front, followed by 2 strides and a rail jump. It is the highest competition bank in the world.

The British Horse Society Equestrian Hall of Fame was launched in 2005 to pay homage to the people and horses who have made outstanding contributions to the sport of Equestrianism in Great Britain. Elections to the Hall of Fame are made by a Panel of laureates and the British Horse Society Chairman. The panel meets annually to consider suggestions put forward from within the panel, BHS Members, and by the general public. On 20 February, 2008 a wall of plaques at the Household Cavalry’s barracks in Knightsbridge, London were revealed in a ceremony by Anne, Princess Royal.
