Michael Joseph Ruth is an American former professional football defensive tackle. He played college football for the Boston College Eagles, where he won the Outland Trophy as college football's best lineman in 1985. After two seasons in the National Football League (NFL) with the New England Patriots, who drafted him in the second round of the 1986 NFL Draft, he finished his professional football career with the Barcelona Dragons of the World League of American Football (WLAF) in 1991 and 1992.

William Hanson Morton was an American football player and business executive. He played college football for Dartmouth from 1929 to 1931, and later was an executive with American Express. Morton was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1972.
Karibi Dede is an American Football coach and former player who serves as the defensive backs coach at Charlotte. Dede played safety and linebacker for Auburn University before a brief stint in the NFL and CFL.

Mal Mathad Moore was an American football coach and college athletics administrator. He served as the athletic director at the University of Alabama from 1999 to 2013. On November 23, 1999, he was hired as athletic director after spending almost thirty years in other areas with the university. As a player, coach, and director of athletics, Moore was part of ten national championship football teams. In May 2012, he was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. Moore died March 30, 2013, in Durham, North Carolina.

It is named in part for sports writer Grantland Rice. The 36 poll voters include 26 members of the Football Writers Association of America, with the remaining 10 voters each coming from the National Football Foundation or College Football Hall of Fame.
