William Rankin was a Scottish professional football who made over 470 appearances in the Scottish Football League's top division for Motherwell, Cowdenbeath and Clyde, playing at inside right. [4] [5] [6]

Contents

He represented the Scottish Football League XI four times [7] and played in two of the annual Home Scots v Anglo-Scots international trial matches, scoring in one, [8] [9] but this did not lead to a full cap for Scotland. In 1921 he was a member of the squad sometimes presented as 'Scotland' which toured North America, but this was organised by the Third Lanark club rather than the Scottish Football Association. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Third Lanark A.C.</span> Former association football club in Scotland

Third Lanark Athletic Club was a Scottish football club based in Glasgow. Founded in 1872 as an offshoot of the 3rd Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers, the club was a founder member of the Scottish Football Association (SFA) in 1872 and the Scottish Football League (SFL) in 1890. Third Lanark played in the top division of the SFL for the majority of the club's existence, and won the league championship in 1903–04. The club also won the Scottish Cup twice, in 1889 and 1905. Third Lanark went out of business in 1967, as a result of mismanagement, six years after having finished in third place in the SFL. Third Lanark's former ground, Cathkin Park in Crosshill, is still partially standing and is used for minor league football.

The Scottish War Emergency Cup was a temporary competition held at the start of the Second World War, due to the suspension of the Scottish Cup by the SFA. It was held between February and May in 1940, the competition involved all sixteen League clubs still operating at the time, Cowdenbeath later withdrew which meant Dunfermline Athletic received a bye in the first round. Rangers beat Dundee United 1–0 in the Final.

William Cowan Fotheringham was a Scottish footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He made over 700 first team league and cup appearances during his career with Dundee, Morton, Queen of the South, Airdrieonians and St Mirren, and was later manager of the latter two clubs as well as Cowdenbeath.

William Telfer was a Scottish footballer who played as a left half for Blantyre Celtic, Motherwell, Airdrieonians, Dumbarton and Scotland. He was a member of the Motherwell team that won the club's only Scottish Football League title in 1931–32, missing only one match in that season, and also played in two Scottish Cup finals.
