George Winston Roddick, CB , KC (born 2 October 1940 in Caernarfon) [1] is a Welsh barrister,and the former North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner. At the time he was a member of the Liberal Democrats,but ran as an independent and on election resigned from the Party. Roddick was the first person to hold the post.
Roddick was born and raised in Caernarfon, [1] educated at the Royal Naval School Tal-Handaq,Malta [2] and the Sir Hugh Owen Grammar School,Caernarfon. [3]
After training and working as a police officer in Liverpool,he undertook a law degree at University College,London. [4] [5]
He then trained as a barrister,appointed to the bar in 1968, [6] and then became a Crown Court recorder. [6] One of Wales's leading barristers,he took silk in 1986, [6] and was appointed as the first Counsel General for Wales in 1998,the most senior legal adviser to the Welsh Assembly,during which time he advised on the creation and legislative passing of the Welsh Language Act 1993. [7]
Roddick has twice stood for the Liberal Party unsuccessfully in Parliamentary elections:in Anglesey at the 1970 general election,and in Cardiff South and Penarth in 1983. He also served as Chairman of the Welsh Liberal Party in the early 1980s. [8]
In November 2012,he sought election as the Police and Crime Commissioner for North Wales Police,beating Labour's Tal Michael on the second count. [7] After his election,he was criticised for running as an independent even though he is a member of the Liberal Democrats,with the Welsh Labour Party accusing him of 'hiding' his allegiance for political reasons. [9] Roddick stood down at the 2016 elections and the seat was won by Arfon Jones of Plaid Cymru.
In 1997,Roddick was appointed a member of the Independent Television Commission [ citation needed ],and between 2004 and 2012 was a member of the S4C Authority. [10]
He is a member of the Gorsedd of Bards, [11] patron of Caernarfon Rugby Club,an Honorary Life Member of Caernarfon Town F.C. Supporters Club, [12] the Honorary President of GISDA (Gwynedd charity for homeless young people), [13] and the Vice President of the Caernarfon Male Voice Choir. [14]
Roddick was awarded the Companion of the Order of the Bath in 2003, [15] and became an Honorary Fellow of the University of Aberystwyth in 1999. [16]
Caernarfon is a royal town,community and port in Gwynedd,Wales. It has a population of 9,852. It lies along the A487 road,on the eastern shore of the Menai Strait,opposite the island of Anglesey. The city of Bangor is 8.6 miles (13.8 km) to the north-east,while Snowdonia (Eryri) fringes Caernarfon to the east and south-east.
S4C is a Welsh language free-to-air public broadcast television channel. Launched on 1 November 1982,it was the first television channel to be aimed specifically at a Welsh-speaking audience. As of 2024,S4C had an average of 118 employees. S4C is the fourth-oldest terrestrial television channel in Wales after BBC One,ITV and BBC Two.
The Cymru Premier,known as the JD Cymru Premier for sponsorship reasons,is the national football league of Wales. It has both professional and semi-professional status clubs and is at the top of the Welsh football league system. Prior to 2002,the league was known as the League of Wales (LoW),but changed its name as part of a sponsorship deal to the Welsh Premier League. The league was rebranded as the Cymru Premier for the 2019–20 season.
Alun Edward Michael is a Welsh Labour and Co-operative retired politician. He served as Secretary of State for Wales from 1998 to 1999 and then as the first First Secretary of Wales and Leader of Welsh Labour from 1999 to 2000. He went on to serve as South Wales Police and Crime Commissioner from 2012 to 2024.
Dafydd Wynne Wigley,Baron Wigley,is a Welsh politician who served as the leader of Plaid Cymru from 1981 to 1984 and again from 1991 to 2000. He served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Caernarfon from 1974 to 2001 and as the Member of the Welsh Assembly for Caernarfon from 1999 to 2003. In 2010,Wigley was granted life peerage,taking his seat in the House of Lords in 2011.
Ceredigion was a parliamentary constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament. Created in 1536,the franchise expanded in the late 19th century and on the enfranchisement of women. Its boundaries remained virtually unchanged until 1983. Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen is a bilingual comprehensive secondary school for pupils aged 11–18. The school is situated in Caernarfon,Gwynedd,Wales. The school was established in 1894,the first to be built under the Welsh Intermediate Education Act 1889,which was heavily influenced by the educator Sir Hugh Owen,after whom the school was named.
The 2012 police and crime commissioner elections were polls held in most police areas in England and Wales on Thursday 15 November. The direct election of police and crime commissioners (PCCs) was originally scheduled for May 2012 but was postponed in order to secure the passage of the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act 2011 through the House of Lords. A police and crime commissioner is an elected official in England and Wales responsible for generally overseeing police services. A police,fire and crime commissioner (PFCC) is an elected official in England responsible for generally overseeing both police and fire services. Commissioners replaced now-abolished police authorities. The first were elected on 15 November 2012.
