Wiske (English: Wanda, Suzy, Bobette, Lucy) is one of the main characters in the popular Belgian comic strip Suske en Wiske by Willy Vandersteen. She is the girl of the duo. Together with Lambik she is one of the most popular characters in the franchise.
Wiske made her debut in the very first Suske and Wiske story "Rikki en Wiske in Chocowakije" (1945) ("Rikki and Wiske in Chocowakije"). [1] Her companion in this story is her older and stronger brother Rikki, who was written out of the series at the start of the next story "Het Eiland Amoras" (1945-1946) ("The Isle of Amoras"). When Wiske travelled to the isle of Amoras along with Tante Sidonia and Professor Barabas she met Suske there, who took Rikki's place as her male companion. [2]
Wiske is adopted by her aunt, Tante Sidonia. It is never directly implied, but just like Suske she is likely an orphan, as her parents are never seen around.
Vandersteen named Wiske after the Flemish opera singer Wiske Ghijs. [3] Her real name is "Louisa", but this is hardly used in the series. The nickname "Wiske" is a Flemish diminutive form of "Louisa".
Contrary to Suske Wiske is more flawed as a person. She is stubborn, prone to anger and jealousy, too curious for her own good and can be vain, disobedient, lazy and impulsive. However, she still has a heart of gold. Her impulsiveness and curiosity often bring her and others in trouble. This also explains why more stories center around her than the good-natured Suske. Just like Lambik Wiske is one of the most popular characters in the franchise because readers can relate to her human personality flaws more. [3]
Suske and Wiske are best friends, despite quarreling once in a while. One of the recurring storylines is Wiske's jealousy whenever Suske receives attention from other young, attractive females.
Wiske has a little doll, Schanulleke, whom she carries along with her wherever she goes. She adores her doll so much that she is heartbroken whenever it is lost or someone threatens to destroy it.
Wiske traditionally concludes every story by winking at the audience, which has become a trademark of the franchise. [3]
Suske plays the central role in the spin-off series Amoras. The first volume is named after him. He is also the central character in the junior version Klein Suske en Wiske ("Little Suske and Wiske").
Both she and Suske have their own statue in the Antwerp Zoo in Antwerp. It was sculpted by René Rosseel in 1978. [4] They also have a statue in Middelkerke, sculpted by Monique Mol in 2002. [5]
On June 15, 1995 an illustrated wall was dedicated to Suske and Wiske in the Laekenstraat in Brussels, Belgium. [6] [7]
Suske and Wiske are also part of an illustrated wall in the Korte Ridderstraat 8 in Antwerp, which was revealed on May 13, 2006. [8] On April 24, 2009 a similar wall was revealed in Kalmthout. [9]
In the 1975-1976 Dutch TV puppet series Suske en Wiske Wiske's voice was done by Helen Huisman.
In the 1994 musical "De Stralende Sterren" Hilde Vanhulle played the part of Wiske. [10] In the 2002, musical "De Spokenjagers" Wiske was played by Femke Stoop. [11] Liesbeth De Wolf played Wiske in the 2008 musical "De Circusbaron". [12]
In the 2004 live-action film De duistere diamant Céline Verbeeck played Wiske. In the 2009 3-D animated feature film Luke and Lucy: The Texas Rangers Evelien Verhegge played Lucy (Wiske).
The Adventures of Nero or Nero was a Belgian comic strip drawn by Marc Sleen and the name of its main character. The original title ranged from De Avonturen van Detectief Van Zwam in 1947 to De Avonturen van Nero en zijn Hoed in 1950, and finally De Avonturen van Nero & Co from 1951. It ran in continuous syndication until 2002. From 1947 until 1993 it was all drawn by Sleen himself. From 1992 until 2002 Dirk Stallaert took over the drawing while Sleen kept inventing the stories.

Luke and Lucy: The Texas Rangers is a 2009 Belgian-Luxembourgish-Dutch CGI animated western comedy adventure film released on 21 July 2009 as the first of it kind to be created in Belgium in a projected 13 animated films, at a rate of one per year. The film is based on the Belgian comic book characters Luke and Lucy. The film is directed by Mark Mertens and Wim Bien, and produced by Skyline Entertainment, in partnership with CoToon, LuxAnimation, BosBros, and WAT Productions. The film was first announced in a 1 July 2005 press release. The Flanders Audiovisual Fund announced on 20 April 2006 that it would provide €12,500 for script development, and a further €237,500 was announced in September 2007 for production of the film. The total budget of the film is €9 million, making it the most expensive Flemish-Belgian film to date.

The reference concerned what conditions must be met for a derivative work to be considered a parody. Parodies are allowed under the Information Society Directive, in those countries that have indicated to apply the parody exception. The European Court of Justice indicated that the definition of the copyright exceptions was consistent throughout the EU and that to qualify the work must "evoke an existing work, while being noticeably different from it, and secondly, to constitute an expression of humour or mockery". The humour or mockery does not need to be directed towards the work itself, but it can also be mockery of something/someone else. When considering a parody-case the court should strike a fair balance between the rights of the rights holders of the original work, as the maker of the parody.

He is the series' strongman and well known for his physically impossible powers that often make him the deus ex machina who solves every problem. Jerom's popularity with readers is so huge that he inspired at least two spin-off series: Jerom de Gouden Stuntman (1962–1991) and J. ROM - Force of Gold (2014).
De Lustige Kapoentjes was a long-running Flemish comic book series, which existed under different titles and was drawn by different artists, among whom Marc Sleen and Willy Vandersteen are the most well known. The series was published in 't Kapoentje, the youth supplement of Het Volk, and in Ons Volkske, the youth supplement of De Standaard. They were the mascots of 't Kapoentje from 1947 until the magazine's demise in 1985.
