Joseph ("Josy") Barthel was a Luxembourgish athlete. He was the surprise winner of the Men's 1500 metres at the 1952 Summer Olympics, and the only athlete representing Luxembourg to have won a gold medal at the Olympics. Besides athletics, Barthel also led successful careers in both chemistry and politics.
Eliud Kipchoge is a Kenyan long-distance runner who competes in the marathon and formerly specialized in the 5000 metres. Kipchoge is the 2016 and 2020 Olympic marathon champion, and was the world record holder in the marathon from 2018 to 2023, until that record was broken by Kelvin Kiptum at the 2023 Chicago Marathon. Kipchoge has run four of the 10 fastest marathons in history.
Katrin Dörre-Heinig is a former athlete from Germany, who competed mainly in the marathon. She won extensively on the road running circuit, having taken titles at races including the Tokyo Marathon, Berlin Marathon and the London Marathon; she won three times consecutively in London from 1992 to 1994.
Athletes from West Germany competed at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, Mexico. It was the first time that East Germany and West Germany sent separate teams to the Summer Olympic Games. 275 competitors, 232 men and 43 women, took part in 154 events in 17 sports for West Germany. As the country hosted the next Olympics in Munich, the West German flag was raised at the closing ceremony.

Wolfgang Gunkel was an East German rower who mostly competed in coxed pairs together with Jörg Lucke. In this event he won the European title in 1971, the Olympic gold medal in 1972, and the world title in 1975. His crew placed fourth at the 1968 Olympics. Gunkel won another world title in the men's eight in 1977. In February 1978, he was given the sports awards Honoured Master of Sports.

Michael Aish is a New Zealand long-distance runner. He competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, in the men's 5000 metres. He is a prolific runner with a 2:13:21 personal best time in the marathon. He was formerly married to woman's U.S. Marathon Champion Nicole Aish and is presently married to long-distance runner Christy Burns.
Helmut Schmuck is an Austrian long-distance runner from Salzburg. He competed in the men's marathon at the 1992 Summer Olympics. His personal best time of 2:13.17 was set at the Vienna City Marathon in 1990. He also is a two-time Austrian national athletic champion over 10,000 meters.
Wolfgang Klapheck is a German former rower. He competed in the men's coxed four events at the 1988 Summer Olympics.
Ulrich Aloysius Konrad is a German musicologist and professor at the Institute for Music Research of the University of Würzburg. He is considered an expert on European music of the 17th to 20th centuries, especially the works of Mozart, Robert Schumann, Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. He wrote a biography, Wolfgang Amadé Mozart, and studied the composer's sketches.
John Skovbjerg is a Danish marathon runner, who won the 1984 Berlin Marathon, and came second at the 1985 and 1986 Vienna City Marathons.
Bernd Jeffré is a German paracyclist who won the handcycle race at the 2008 Berlin Marathon. He also won a bronze medal in the road time trial H3 event at the 2012 Summer Paralympics, and has won three team relay bronze medals at the UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships. He competed at the delayed 2020 Summer Paralympics.
Konrad Paul Liessmann is an Austrian philosopher, essayist and cultural publicist. He is a university professor for "Methods of Teaching Philosophy and Ethics" at the University of Vienna. He officially retired in 2018, but continued his professorial activities at the University of Vienna on a special contract basis until the end of 2020.
