The Women's Premier Division is a rugby union club competition for women that is played in South Africa. it is supported by the South African Rugby Union (SARU).
The first South African Inter-Provincial Women's Rugby tournament was held in August 2002 in Port Elizabeth [1] and was won by Falcons. The first women rugby union championship was launched in April 2003 under the name of SARU Women's Interprovincial Championship. [2] [3]
In 2018 SARU decided to reform the Championship which was renamed the Women's Premier Division. Western Province won in 2019 and Border Ladies won in 2021 for the fifth time. [4]
In May 2023, the Bulls Daisies became the first professional women's rugby side in South Africa. They swept to the 2023 title, winning all 14 games. [5]

The Currie Cup is South Africa's premier domestic rugby union competition featuring teams representing either entire provinces or substantial regions within provinces. Although it is the premier domestic competition, four South African franchises also compete in the United Rugby Championship competition, including for the 'South African Shield'. for the highest placed South African team.
The Southern Spears were a South African rugby union franchise who were founded in 2005 and were intended to participate in Super 14 from 2007 onwards; however, their proposed entry into the competition led to considerable controversy within the country's rugby establishment. In April 2006, after concerns over the franchise's financial stability and sporting competitiveness, the Spears were denied entry into the Super 14. Following this, the Southern Spears effectively ceased to exist. In June 2009, the Southern Kings, a Port Elizabeth based Super Rugby team, was established and is not connected with the former outfit.
Petrus Fourie du Preez is a South African former professional rugby union player. He played as a scrum half for the Blue Bulls in the Currie Cup competition and the Bulls in Super Rugby between 2002 and 2011, and for Japanese Top League side Suntory Sungoliath between 2011 and 2016. He represented South Africa between 2004 and 2015, winning 76 caps, playing in three Rugby World Cup tournaments, and winning the 2007 competition.

The SA Cup was created to replace the Mzanzi Challenge which was played for only one season in 2023 and was won by the Falcons. The inaugural SA Cup competition was contested between 21 March 2024 - 25 May 2024 and the primary function of the SA Cup is to serve as qualification to the Currie Cup Premier Division and Currie Cup First Division respectively. The domestic teams with a place in the United Rugby Championship, namely the Blue Bulls, Western Province, Sharks and Golden Lions are excluded from the SA Cup.
