Wow Philippines (stylized as WOW Philippines) was a tourism marketing campaign used to promote tourism in the Philippines. The name of the campaign also served as its tagline.

Background

Then Department of Tourism secretary Richard Gordon conceptualized the tagline "Wow Philippines" himself in 2002. The government agency then has a limited budget allotted for advertising. [1] The promotional campaign was based on the 24-month Visit Philippines 2003 campaign by the World Tourism Organization which aimed to encourage the Filipino diaspora to visit tourism sites in the Philippines. [2]

The Department of Tourism (DOT) then commissioned advertising firm BBDO Guerrero [3] for the implementation of the campaign. This includes the coming up with promotional materials and the addition of "More than the Usual" as a sub slogan. [1] Also the "Wow" of the campaign slogan is meant to be capitalized which doubles as an acronym. The meaning of the acronym varies depending on the usage of the slogan according to the government agency. The following are some possible meanings given by the DOT are the following: [2]

Impact and legacy

From 2003 to 2005, several tourism campaigns were conceptualized which include "Biyahe Tayo" (Pfizer and Perceptions Inc.), "I Love Philippines Biyahe Na!" (Smart) and "Pilipino sa Turismo'y Aktibo" (Philippine Tourism Authority, ABS-CBN and Star Records). The following personalities from the entertainment and political field lent their popularity to promote tourism to mainstream audiences during that time: [5] [6]

Between 2007 and 2012, foreign visits in the Philippines increased from about 3 million to 4.27 million. [7] The campaign also generated 2800-4000 jobs. [8]

A remake of "Biyahe Tayo" was produced in 2011 and was re-titled as "Pilipinas, Tara Na!" and also had expanded lyrics with the addition of other artists including Pepe Smith, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Martin Nievera, Jaya, Kitchie Nadal, Kyla, Jay R, Billy Crawford, Aiza Seguerra, Nikki Gil, Yeng Constantino and Sam Concepcion among others, with additional spoken parts from Dolphy and Manny Pacquiao. A few of the artists were absorbed from the original version such as Gibbs, Alcasid, Jim Paredes and Boboy Garovillo (of the APO Hiking Society) and Villegas. [9]

Reception

In 2003, the Wow Philippines campaign was named as the Best Marketing Effort of a National Tourism Organization in the overall category in 2002 at the Internationale Tourismus Bourse. [2]

<i>Pilipinas Got Talent</i> Philippine talent competition show

Pilipinas Got Talent (PGT) is a Philippine reality talent competition show on ABS-CBN that began on February 20, 2010, replacing The Singing Bee & Pinoy Big Brother: Double Up and replaced by Twist and Shout on July 3, 2010. It is based on the Got Talent franchise, a British TV format conceived and owned by Simon Cowell's SYCO company. "Pilipinas" is the Filipino word for Philippines. Anyone can join and showcase their talents in the audition. At the sound of four buzzers from the judges, the auditionees are asked to stop their act. With at least three approval votes from the judges, they are automatically in the list for Judges Cuts, where judges have to pick only 36 acts that will move to the semi-finals. Acts will compete against each other in order to gain the audience support to win the prize money and the title of Pilipinas Got Talent.

"Handog ng Pilipino sa Mundo", released in English as "A New and Better Way—The People's Anthem," is a 1986 song recorded in Filipino by a supergroup composed of 15 Filipino artists. The song serves to commemorate the bloodless People Power Revolution which ended President Ferdinand Marcos's 20-year rule, as well as a benefit single for the rehabilitation of Radio Veritas, a public affairs radio station instrumental in the revolution. The lyrics of the song are inscribed on a wall of Our Lady of EDSA Shrine, the center of the revolution.

The 22nd PMPC Star Awards for TV ceremony was held at the SMX Convention Center, SM Mall of Asia, Pasay on November 30, 2008, and broadcast over TV5 on December 2, 2008. The ceremony was hosted by Paolo Bediones, Gabby Concepcion, Anne Curtis and Judy Ann Santos and directed by Al Quinn.

The 20th PMPC Star Awards for Television ceremony was held at the UP Theater, Quezon City on October 23, 2006 and broadcast over RPN Channel 9 on October 28, 2006. The ceremony was hosted by Boy Abunda, Tin Tin Bersola-Babao, Jean Garcia, Toni Gonzaga and Joey Marquez and directed by Ding Bolanos.

I Do Bidoo Bidoo: Heto nAPO Sila! is a 2012 Filipino musical, romantic-comedy film starring singers Sam Concepcion, Ogie Alcasid, Gary Valenciano, Zsa Zsa Padilla, comedian Eugene Domingo and introducing new actress Tippy Dos Santos. The film is produced by Unitel in partnership with Studio 5 and had a regular showing on August 29, 2012. The film features the music of APO Hiking Society, as a tribute to one of the most influential OPM artists.

The fourth season of Pilipinas Got Talent is a talent show on ABS-CBN. The show premiered on February 16, 2013. Billy Crawford, and Luis Manzano reprised their hosting duties; while Kris Aquino, Ai-Ai delas Alas, and Freddie Garcia returned as judges of the show.

Dolphy Alay Tawa: A Musical Tribute to the King of Philippine Comedy is a 2012 Philippine concert paying tribute to comedian and actor, Dolphy, named as the Philippines' king of comedy, who died on July 10, 2012, due to multiple organ failure. The concert was held at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay on September 19, 2012, and was simultaneously aired as a television special on September 30, 2012, by the three major Philippine commercial television networks: ABS-CBN, GMA Network and TV5.

Mga Kwento ni Lola Basyang was a withdrawn fantasy action-adventure film produced by Unitel Productions. The film is composed of two stories, "Pedrong Walang Takot" and "Mariang Alimango" derived from the short stories of Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang written by Severino Reyes. The film would have been directed by Mark Meilly, and Chris Martinez. The film also would have starred Richard Gomez, Paolo Contis, Sam Concepcion, Iza Calzado, Rufa Mae Quinto, Empress Schuck and Zsa Zsa Padilla. It was one of the 8 official entries for 2012 Metro Manila Film Festival but later on, the film sent a request letter to MMDA to pull out of the festival. On October 19, the film was replaced by Thy Womb.

The 27th PMPC Star Awards for Television ceremony was held at the AFP Theater in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City on November 24, 2013, and broadcast over ABS-CBN Channel 2 on December 1, 2013. The ceremony was hosted by Alex and Toni Gonzaga, Raymond and Richard Gutierrez and directed by Al Quinn. The theme is in coincidence with the Philippine Television's 60th anniversary.

The 26th PMPC Star Awards for Television ceremony was held at the Henry Lee Irwin Theater in Ateneo de Manila University, Quezon City on November 18, 2012 and broadcast over ABS-CBN Channel 2 on November 25, 2012.
