YASA is a British manufacturer of electric motors and motor controllers for use in automotive and industrial applications. [1] [2] [3] The company was founded in 2009 by the CTO Dr Tim Woolmer who is also the holder of a number of related motor technology patents. [4] Although initial commercial adoption was in high-performance cars, markets for YASA e-motors and generators now include the off-road, marine, industrial and aerospace sectors.
YASA Limited (formerly YASA Motors Limited) was founded in September 2009 to commercialise a permanent-magnet axial-flux electric motor (YASA stands for Yokeless and Segmented Armature). The motor was developed for the Morgan LIFEcar in 2008 by Dr Malcolm McCulloch and Dr Tim Woolmer, then a PhD student, at the University of Oxford. [2] [4] [5] In 2015, YASA Motors launched the P400 Series of motors in serial production for volume manufacturers. [6] In January 2018, YASA's 1st series production facility, capable of 100,000 units per year, was officially opened [7] by Greg Clark, UK Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.
In May 2019, the company announced "Ferrari selects YASA electric motor for SF90 Stradale, the company's first hybrid production series supercar" [8]
On 22 July 2021 YASA Limited was acquired by Mercedes-Benz. [9]
On 21 May 2024, YASA received approval to establish its new headquarters at a former RAF base in Bicester, Oxfordshire. [10]
YASA offer a range of off-the-shelf and custom motors for use in a number of applications such as electric (BEV) and hybrid vehicle drivetrain, [11] power generation and hydraulics replacement systems. [12] [13]
YASA's standard electric motors have been used in several high-performance cars such as the Drive eO PP03 (the first EV to win the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb outright), [14] Jaguar C-X75, Koenigsegg Regera, [15] and a Lola Le Mans Prototype converted by Drayson Racing, which set a world electric land speed record in 2013. [16] [17]
The YASA P400 series of electric motors produces up to 160 kW (210 hp) peak power at 700 V and 370 N⋅m (270 ft⋅lb ) of peak torque at 450 Amps. [18] At this peak power, the off-the-shelf P400 Series achieves a power density of 6.67 kW/kg (4.06 hp/lb ), with continuous rating of up to 100 kW (130 hp). The stator of the P400 series motors is oil cooled, and can optionally include additional air cooling. [18]
The YASA 750 R is the larger and more powerful electric motor in YASA's standard range, producing up to 200 kW (270 hp) of peak power at 700 V and 790 N⋅m (580 ft⋅lb) of peak torque. Continuous operating power for the 750 R is stated at up to 70 kW (94 hp). [19]
As well as standard products, YASA designs and manufactures e-motors that are fully integrated into the drivetrain of their OEM and Tier 1 automotive customers. The e-motors feature power densities up to 20 kW/kg (12 hp/lb) [20] in vehicle applications that include P2 Hybrid Vehicle Powertrain, [21] P4 traction motor for e-axle [20] and REx (range-extension). [22]
Koenigsegg Automotive AB is a Swedish manufacturer of high-performance sports cars based in Ängelholm, Skåne County, Sweden.
The Audi Q7 is a crossover SUV made by the German manufacturer Audi, unveiled in September 2005 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Production of this seven-seater SUV began in the autumn of 2005 at the Volkswagen Bratislava Plant in Bratislava, Slovakia.
The Toyota NZ engine family is a straight-4 piston engine series. The 1NZ series uses aluminum engine blocks and DOHC cylinder heads. It also uses sequential fuel injection, and has 4 valves per cylinder with VVT-i.
A direct-drive mechanism is a mechanism design where the force or torque from a prime mover is transmitted directly to the effector device without involving any intermediate couplings such as a gear train or a belt.
The Mazda Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid or Mazda5 Hydrogen RE Hybrid was a hydrogen powered hybrid car produced by Mazda. Later models were also called the Mazda Hydrogen RE Plug in Hybrid. The first car was unveiled in 2005, with an improved version shown at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. Mazda planned for the car to enter production and leased a few cars to end users in 2009 in 2010.
The Koenigsegg Agera is a mid-engine sports car produced by Swedish car manufacturer Koenigsegg. It is a successor to the CCX/CCXR. The name comes from the Swedish verb 'agera' which means "to act" or in imperative form "(You) act!".
The Jaguar C-X75 is a hybrid-electric, 2-seat, concept car produced by British automobile manufacturer Jaguar Cars in partnership with the derivative of the Formula One team, Williams Advanced Engineering, which debuted at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. The powertrain of the C-X75 concept is rated at 778 hp through four YASA electric motors, each of which drives one of the four wheels. The batteries driving these motors are recharged using two diesel-fed micro gas turbines instead of a conventional four-stroke engine. It was described as a design study that would influence future design and technology.
The Subaru FB engine is the third and current generation of gasoline boxer-4 engine used in Subaru automobiles, and was announced on 23 September 2010. It follows the previous generation EJ-series engine which was introduced in 1989 and the first generation EA-series which was introduced in 1966. By increasing piston stroke and decreasing piston bore, Subaru aimed to reduce emissions and improve fuel economy, while increasing and broadening torque output compared to the EJ-series.
The Koenigsegg Regera is a limited production, plug-in hybrid grand touring sports car manufactured by Swedish automotive manufacturer Koenigsegg. It was unveiled at the March 2015 Geneva Motor Show. The name Regera is a Swedish verb, meaning "to reign" or "to rule". Koenigsegg produced 85 Regeras, most of which were sold upon unveiling.
The Hyundai Ioniq is a compact five-door liftback manufactured and marketed by Hyundai. The nameplate Ioniq is a portmanteau of ion and unique. It is marketed as the first Hyundai automobile to be offered without a standard internal combustion engine, but rather sold in hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric variants.
The Koenigsegg Jesko is a limited production mid-engine sports car produced by the Swedish automobile manufacturer Koenigsegg. The car was introduced at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show and was completely sold out before the show ended. Succeeding the Agera, the Jesko is named as a tribute to the company founder's father, Jesko von Koenigsegg. There are two variations of the car, the "Absolut" and the "Attack".

An axial flux motor is a geometry of electric motor construction where the gap between the rotor and stator, and therefore the direction of magnetic flux between the two, is aligned parallel with the axis of rotation, rather than radially as with the concentric cylindrical geometry of the more common radial flux motor. With axial flux geometry torque increases with the cube of the rotor diameter, whereas in a radial flux the increase is only quadratic. Axial flux motors have a larger magnetic surface and overall surface area than radial flux motors for a given volume.
