The YMCA Building is the current headquarters of YMCA of Singapore. It also operates a hotel under the name of YMCA @ One Orchard.

Background

Plans of the new YMCA headquarters building was first started in 1969 by its committee. After many revisions, the proposal was approved by the authorities in 1979 to build the nine-storey building at the site at Orchard area.

The former YMCA Building, which was once served as the notorious headquarters of Kenpeitai during the Japanese occupation of Singapore, was demolished in 1981 to make way for the construction of new building, with fund-raising efforts started on the same year and the next.

The new YMCA Building was officially opened on 24 November 1984 by the then Minister for Law Edmund William Barker. [1] It currently serves as headquarters of the YMCA of Singapore for its members and also serves as a hotel YMCA @ One Orchard [2] for tourists and travelers in Singapore. [3]

Kenpeitai East District Branch

The Kempeitai East District Branch was the headquarters of the Kempeitai, the Japanese military police, during the Japanese occupation of Singapore from 1942 to 1945. It was located at the old YMCA building, at the present site of Singapore's YMCA on Stamford Road. Opened in 1911, the distinctive Art Deco YMCA building was the site of interrogation and torture of many innocent civilians, including the war heroine Elizabeth Choy. After the war, the Singapore government erected several memorials with some at the former massacre sites. In 1995, the former site of the old YMCA building was gazetted by the National Heritage Board as one of the eleven World War II sites of Singapore.

Twelfth Street YMCA Building, also known as Anthony Bowen YMCA, was home to the first African American chapter of YMCA, founded in 1853 by Anthony Bowen. It is located at 1816 12th Street NW in the U Street Corridor (Cardozo/Shaw) neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The building was reopened on February 20, 2000 as the Thurgood Marshall Center in honor of the first African American Associate Justice to serve on the United States Supreme Court. The Thurgood Marshall Center now serves as a community center for residents of the U Street Corridor and Shaw neighborhoods. The permanent organization of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. was established in the Bowen Room.

Chen Su Lan Singaporean physician

Dr Chen Su Lan was one of the Singaporean first local medical graduates. He was also an anti-opium fighter, philanthropist and social reformer. He served in a number of important committees including the Tan Tock Seng Hospital Management Committee, the Central Midwives Board and the Council of King Edward VII College of Medicine. After the Japanese Occupation of Singapore, he joined the Advisory Council where he spoke out against social ills caused by the war. He founded the Chinese Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in 1945 and formed the Chen Su Lan Trust in 1947.

Orchard Towers Building in Singapore

Orchard Towers is an 18-storey office building in Singapore located on the corner of Claymore Road and Orchard Road. Construction was completed in 1975. The first five floors are a combination of bars and retail outlets with the remainder leased as offices. The former Young Men's Christian Association Building in Albany, New York, United States, is located on Pearl Street. It was built in the 1880s in the Romanesque Revival architectural style, with an existing neighboring structure annexed to it and a rear addition built in the 1920s. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Two years later, when the Downtown Albany Historic District was designated and listed on the Register, YMCA building was further included as a contributing property.

Dubuque YMCA Building United States historic place

Dubuque YMCA Building, also known as the Iowa Inn, is a historic building located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. Several area churches partnered to form the local YMCA in 1857. It was one of the first chapters formed west of the Mississippi River. Its activities ceased during the American Civil War, and it was reformed in 1866. They rented rooms on Main Street for their activities. Its first modest gymnasium was outfitted in 1884, and it was improved in 1992 when YMCA took over the facilities over the former Dubuque Athletic Club. The local YMCA completed the first section of this facility two years later, with the second section completed in 1916.
