Yamkeshwar is a tehsil in the district of Pauri Garhwal, in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. [1] It comes under Kotdwar sub-division. The place gets its name from the ancient temple of Yamkeshwar, which according to local lore is the place where Markandeya rishi was saved from Yamaraj by God Shiva. [2]

The tehsil is part of Yamkeshwar Assembly constituency and currently represented by Renu Bisht [3] of BJP. The tehsil also has the ancestral village of UP CM Yogi Adityanath. [4]

The tehsil is well connected by road and can be reached either from Haridwar and Rishikesh, or through Kotdwar and Lansdowne. Majority of the Tehsil is rural and hilly area. Most people find employment in agriculture or tourism activities. In 2022, the tehsil was in the news for the Ankita Bhandari murder case. [5]

He became the youngest Minister of Uttar Pradesh State in the year 1991 and also won assembly election from Pauri. He was the candidate of Indian National Congress from Garhwal in 2014 Indian general election. He was expelled from BJP and the Cabinet led by Pushkar Singh Dhami stating that he has indulged in anti-party activities and he is demanding ticket for his daughter in law (Anukriti) as well for the Uttarakhand Assembly Elections 2022. He later joined Congress in the presence of former Uttarakhand CM Harish Rawat.

Ankita Bhandari was an Indian receptionist from Pauri who was allegedly raped and subsequently murdered at the Vanantra Resort in Ganga-Bhogpur in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. The case gained much publicity in national and state media due to its disastrous mismanagement and supposed involvement of a politically influential 'VIP' in sex coercion, but no identification has been made. The theory is supported by statements of her mother. Though the chats presented in the Chargesheet, did not mention any specific VIP Angle.
