The Soviet Union (USSR) competed, for the last time before its dissolution, at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. 481 competitors, 319 men and 162 women, took part in 221 events in 27 sports. Athletes from 12 of the ex-Soviet republics would compete as the Unified Team at the 1992 Summer Olympics, and each nation would field independent teams in subsequent Games.
The Unified Team at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, was a joint team consisting of twelve of the fifteen former Soviet republics that chose to compete together. Burundi participated in the 2008 Summer Olympics, held in Beijing, China from 8 to 24 August 2008. It was Burundi's fourth appearance in the summer Olympics since its debut in 1996. The Burundi team included three athletes: runners Joachim Nshimirimana and Francine Niyonizigiye, as well as swimmer Elsie Uwamahoro. Niyonizigiye, a marathon runner, was flag bearer for the opening ceremony. None of the Burundi athletes progressed further than the qualifying round.
Elena Petrovna Sokolova is a Russian freestyle swimmer. She competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in the 800 m freestyle, placing 2nd in her heat and 7th in the final. She was also a member of the Russian 4×100 m freestyle relay, which placed 12th in the heats and did not advance to the final.
Yuliya Anatoliyivna Tkach, née Ostapchuk, is a Ukrainian freestyle wrestler. She is a member of Dynamo sports club. World champion in 2014, she competed for Ukraine at the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics.

Yelena Komarova is an amateur Azerbaijani wrestler, who played for the women's featherweight category. Komarova qualified for the women's 55 kg class at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing by winning the championship title from the Golden Grand Prix in Baku. She lost the first preliminary match to Russia's Nataliya Golts, who was able to score five points in two straight periods, leaving Komarova without a single point.
Elina Vaseva is an amateur Bulgarian freestyle wrestler, who played for the women's middleweight category. She won the bronze medal for her division at the 2010 European Wrestling Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan. She is also a member of Yunak-Lokomotiv Wrestling Club in Ruse, and is coached and trained by Simeon Shterev.
Nataliya Yuryevna Golts is an amateur Russian freestyle wrestler, who played for the women's lightweight category. Yelena Alexeyevna Skalinskaya is a Kazakh former swimmer, who specialized in sprint freestyle and breaststroke events. She is a five-time national champion and record holder in the same stroke. Skalinskaya is a member of the swimming team for Maryland Terrapins, along with her fellow country teammate Marina Mulyayeva.
Natalia Ivanovna Ivanova is a retired amateur Russian-Tajikistani freestyle wrestler, who competed in the women's middleweight category. Considered one of Russia's top female wrestlers of her decade, Ivanova has yielded a remarkable tally of six career medals, including two silver at the World Championships, before she acquired a dual citizenship to compete for Tajikistan in 2002. Since then, she scored a sixth spot in the 63-kg division at the 2002 Asian Games in Busan, South Korea, and also finished eleventh at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Ivanova is also a member of the wrestling squad for Pobeda Sports and Military Games Club in Angarsk, under her personal coach Valery Saiziev.
Yelena Sinchukova is a retired Russian athlete who specialised in the long jump. She competed at the 1996 Summer Olympics, as well as two World Championships.
The Soviet Union women's national artistic gymnastics team represented the Soviet Union in FIG international competitions. They were the dominant force in the sport from the 1950s until the Soviet Union's collapse. They lead the medal tally for women's artistic gymnastics with 88 medals including 33 gold. Larisa Latynina is also the most decorated female athlete at the Olympic games with a total of 18 medals. Soviet dominance was unprecedented in scale and longevity and was likely the result of the country's heavy investment in mass and elite sports to fulfill its political agenda.
