Yellandu is a town in Bhadradri Kothagudem district of the Indian state of Telangana. It is located in Yellandu mandal of Kothagudem revenue division. [3]

Geography

Yellandu is located at 17°36′N80°20′E / 17.6°N 80.33°E / 17.6; 80.33 . [4] It has an average elevation of 205  metres (672  feet). Bhuga vagu divides Yellandu which is started from Yellandula padu cheruvu. one of the important coal seams bore his name. The Hyderabad (Deccan) Company Limited incorporated in England acquired mining rights in 1886 to exploit coal found in Yellandu area. The present Company was incorporated on 23 December 1920 under the Hyderabad Companies Act as a public limited company with the name 'The Singareni Collieries Company Limited' (SCCL). It acquired all the assets and liabilities of the Hyderabad (Deccan) Co. Ltd. Best & Co., acted as Secretaries and Selling Agents. The State of Hyderabad purchased majority shares of the Company in 1945. From 1945 to 1949, the Hyderabad Construction Co., Ltd., was acting as Managing Agent. In 1949 this function was entrusted to Industrial Trust Fund by the then Government of Hyderabad. The controlling interest of the Company devolved on the Government of Andhra Pradesh in 1956 pursuant to the reorganization of States.[ citation needed ]

Demographics

As of 2011 census of India, Yellandu municipality had a population of 33,732. [2] While, its urban agglomeration had a population of 35,056, of which males are 17,016 and females are 18,040. The population under 6 years of age are 3,184. There are a total of 25,192 literates. [5]

Yellandu Municipality was constituted in 1986 and is classified as a third grade municipality with 24 election wards. The jurisdiction of the civic body is spread over an area of 10.09 km2 (3.90 sq mi). [1] Rompaid and Sudimalla are the partial outgrowths to the town as per 2011 census. [5]

Politics

Yellandu is a part of Yellandu (ST) (Assembly constituency) for Telangana Legislative Assembly. Koram Kanakaiha is the present MLA of the constituency from Indian National Congress. [6] It is also a part of Mahabubabad (Lok Sabha constituency) which was won by Kavitha Maloth of Bharat Rashtra Samithi. [7] [8]

Mainly due to its proximity, easily accessible to most Singareni employees and strategic location Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) is planning to move some of its offices from Kothagudem corporate headquarters to Ramagundam.But due to lobbying by Contractors in Singareni Colleries Office at Kothagudem the shifting process is getting delayed.Godavarikhani has 5 opencast coal projects,5 Underground Coal mines in which it has privileged Asia’s biggest mine Adriyala long-wall Projects(ALP) area of SCCL. The Singareni Collieries Company Limited or SCCL is a government-owned-coal mining corporation in India. It is under the ownership of Department of Energy, Government of Telangana. The Union Government's administration of the company is through the 49% ownership held by Ministry of Coal. SCCL is currently operating 45 mines where 20 opencast and 25 underground mines in 6 districts of Telangana with a manpower around 45,079 as of Nov. 2020. SCCL is contributing 9.2% in the all India Domestic Production. Since inception (1889) 1.36 BT of Coal is extracted by SCCL and it has proved reserves of 10.84 BT.

Sita Rama Lift Irrigation Project is an under-construction barrage across Godavari River with run-of-river hydroelectric power project at Dummugudem village, Bhadradri Kothagudem district in Telangana. The project is proposed at about 200 meters downstream of the existing Dummugudem anicut built about 150 years ago.
