Yeshi Dorji (born 10 October 2001) is a Bhutanese international footballer, currently playing for Paro in the Bhutan Premier League and the Bhutan national team. [1]

Club career

Yeshi represented High Quality United during their 2020 Bhutan Super League triumph and received Nu 10,000 for being the highest goal scorer. He joined Paro FC for the Premier League phase and scored 8 goals in 10 games. Yeshi won the 2021 Bhutan Premier League with Paro and received the Bhutan Premier League Top Scorer Award along the way with 23 goals from 17 games. [2]

In January 2020, Yeshi signed a contract with a German football agency, TF Sports, and had a successful trial with VfB Fichte Bielefeld in the Landesliga Westfalen (VII) (Germany sixth division). He was about to become the first Bhutanese to play in Europe but had to return home because of a visa issue and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in Bhutan. In 2021, he received an offer to play on trial in the Cypriot Second Division, but eventually turned it down due to the travel cost. [3]

International career

At the 2020 AFC U-19 Championship qualifiers, Yeshi scored as Bhutan snatched a surprising 2–1 victory over Bangladesh. He scored against Nepal in the 2019 SAFF U-18 Championship, as Bhutan trashed the hosts 3–0. Yeshi was one of the key players in the 2019 South Asian Games in Nepal where Bhutan won the silver medal. During the tournament he struck a goal against Sri Lanka in a 3–1 victory. [4]

He made his first appearance for the Bhutan national team in 2019 against Guam during the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, and became the only footballer in the country to play all youth levels and make his senior national team debut in only 149 days. [3]

The Bhutan national futsal team represents Bhutan in men's international futsal. The team is controlled by the governing body of football and futsal in Bhutan, the Bhutan Football Federation, which is currently a member of the Asian Football Federation and the regional body the South Asian Football Federation. Futsal used to be very much in an embryonic stage of development in Bhutan, with the team only having played eight competitive matches. A national team was selected at very short notice for the fourth Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games held in Incheon, Korea, in 2013. In their first game, they were soundly beaten 29–1 by Thailand, despite scoring through Dawa Dhendup in the first minute. The team is currently ranked 150th and last in the world futsal rankings. By establishing National League and investing in futsal infrastructure, conditions have significantly improved since then.

Football is a sport with a comparatively brief history in Bhutan, having had an initial period of favour in the mid-twentieth century, when it was first introduced to the country by visiting teachers from India and Europe. It has only achieved significantly renewed popularity in the early 2000s, following the advent of satellite television broadcasting, with historically national sport being archery. Consequently, the domestic game was underdeveloped. After the establishment of an initial league in the late 1980s, little in the way of recorded competition took place until the mid-1990s when a formal championship, the A-Division, was created. Football became the most popular sport in Bhutan.

Bathpalathang Airport is a domestic Bhutanese airport in Jakar (Bjakar), Bumthang District. One of only four airports in the country, it opened on 17 December 2011 with flights to Paro. Chencho Nio is a Bhutanese international footballer, who last played for High Quality United in the Bhutan Premier League. He has experience playing in the I-League 2nd Division, the second tier of football in India. Having played in Bhutan for a number of years, he became the first Bhutanese player to become a full-time player when he moved to Royal Wahingdoh in 2010. He made his first appearance for the Bhutan national football team in 2009.

Sports in Bhutan comprise both traditional Bhutanese and modern international games. Archery is the national sport in Bhutan. Competitions are held regularly in most villages. Other traditional Bhutanese sports include khuru, soksom, pundo and digor.

Sujal Shrestha is a Nepali professional footballer who plays as a left winger. He represented the Nepal national team internationally and was part of Nepal's squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Pema Dorji is the Bhutanese football coach. A former international player, he made his first appearance for the Bhutan national football team in 2003.
