You Have Already Gone to the Other World is A Hawk and a Hacksaw's sixth studio album with the subtitle "Music inspired by Paradjanov's Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors". It is a concept album which is written as a retrospective soundtrack for the 1964 movie Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors by Sergei Parajanov.

Background

The album is a concept album, it is arranged as a soundtrack for an already existing movie. Eight tracks are Eastern Europe folk songs from Hungary, Ukraine and Romania which are partly sampled from the movie and newly interpreted and arranged by Barnes and Trost. They also composed new music for the movie and played live along the movie in cinemas and theatres in 2012.

A Hawk and a Hacksaw is an American folk duo from Albuquerque, New Mexico, currently signed to L.M. Duplication. The band consists of accordionist Jeremy Barnes, who was previously the drummer for Neutral Milk Hotel and Bablicon, and violinist Heather Trost. The music is inspired by Eastern European, Turkish and Balkan traditions, and is mostly instrumental. They have released six albums and have toured internationally. The first four albums and an EP were released on The Leaf Label and afterwards on their own label L. M. Duplication.

The Dovzhenko Film Studios is a former Soviet film production studio in Ukraine that was named after the Soviet film producer, Oleksandr Dovzhenko, in 1957. With the fall of the Soviet Union, the studio became a property of the government of Ukraine. In 2000, the film studio was awarded national status.

Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, alternatively translated into English as Shadows of Our Forgotten Ancestors or Shadows of Our Ancestors, also known in English under the alternative title Wild Horses of Fire and under the mistaken title of In the Shadow of the Past, is a 1965 Ukrainian film by the filmmaker Sergei Parajanov based on the novel Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors by Ukrainian writer Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky that tells a "Romeo and Juliet tale" of young Ukrainian Hutsul lovers trapped on opposite sides of a Carpathian family blood feud.

A Hawk and A Hacksaw and the Hun Hangár Ensemble is an EP by A Hawk and a Hacksaw and The Hun Hangár Ensemble released in 2007 on The Leaf Label. A 20-minute bonus DVD was released with the CD, titled An Introduction to A Hawk and a Hacksaw. The DVD documents two years of touring by original band members Jeremy Barnes and Heather Trost with live footage, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at their travels across Europe.

Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors is a novel by Ukrainian writer Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky written in 1911 about his stay in the Hutsul region. The work described the love of Ivan and Marichka, two Hutsuls from rival families, which ends tragically for both. It focuses on aspects of Hutsul life and incorporates elements of folklore.
