Youngstown station is a former passenger railroad station in Youngstown, Ohio. The station is on the ex Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, and was a B&O passenger station for most of the twentieth century. The station was built in 1905 and operated as a passenger station until 1971, when the B&O yielded passenger train service to Amtrak. [2] It was later a passenger station for Amtrak through the 1990s and early 2000s.

History

The station was built in 1905 at the cost of $70,000. It was located on the southern banks of the Mahoning River. This was in contrast to competing stations of the Erie, New York Central and Pennsylvania railroads located in the city's downtown. The B&O raised the railroad tracks to the level of the building's second floor after river flooding of the area, which reached an epic level in March 1913. [3] In 1926 the company added a freight house. [4] [2]

The B&O's famed Capitol Limited ran through the city, but it did not stop there until later years. Noted passenger trains at 1956 included: [5]

Declining years

The B&O terminated several trains running through Youngstown over the course of the 1960s. By 1964, the B&O had eliminated the trains to Cleveland. Detroit-bound travelers would need to transfer at Deshler for the Cincinnatian or the Night Express to Detroit. [6]

The B&O in 1964 changed the Capitol Limited to the Capitol. The renamed train began stopping at intermediate stations such as Youngstown. [7] By 1965, only this station and the Erie station on West Commerce Street remained as passenger stations in Youngstown. [8]

In the station's final years the station was serving the Capitol Limited (name restored) and an unnamed day train from Akron to Washington. [9] In 1971 Amtrak took over passenger train operations from the Baltimore & Ohio and this marked the end of passenger trains at the Youngstown station. All remaining rail traffic was strictly freight oriented. [2]

Amtrak

In the mid-1980s the city bought the station building, amidst anticipation that the building would be demolished. In 1991 a restaurant took over the location. [2] From 1990 to 1995 the station served Amtrak's Broadway Limited (Chicago-New York). [10] [11] It was replaced in 1997 with the Three Rivers , which served Youngstown until its 2005 discontinuance. The Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad, also known as the "Little Giant", was formed on May 11, 1875. Company headquarters were located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The line connected Pittsburgh in the east with Youngstown, Ohio in the Haselton neighborhood in the west and Connellsville, Pennsylvania to the east. It did not reach Lake Erie until the formation of Conrail in 1976. The P&LE was known as the "Little Giant" since the tonnage that it moved was out of proportion to its route mileage. While it operated around one tenth of one percent of the nation's railroad miles, it hauled around one percent of its tonnage. This was largely because the P&LE served the steel mills of the greater Pittsburgh area, which consumed and shipped vast amounts of materials. It was a specialized railroad deriving much of its revenue from coal, coke, iron ore, limestone, and steel. The eventual closure of the steel mills led to the end of the P&LE as an independent line in 1992.

<i>Capitol Limited</i> (B&O train) Former B&O train between New York and Chicago

The Capitol Limited was an American passenger train run by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, originally between New York City and Grand Central Station in Chicago, Illinois, via Union Station, Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Pittsburgh. For almost 48 years, it was the B&O's flagship passenger train, noted for personalized service and innovation. At the time of its discontinuation on May 1, 1971, when Amtrak took over most rail passenger service in the U.S., the Capitol Limited operated between Washington and Chicago.

The B&O inaugurated service on January 19, 1947, with service between Baltimore, Maryland and Cincinnati, Ohio, carrying the number 75 westbound and 76 eastbound, essentially a truncated route of the National Limited which operated between Jersey City, New Jersey and St. Louis.

An alternate branch originated in Detroit and met with the Chicago part of the train at Deshler, Ohio, south of Toledo.

<i>Diplomat</i> (train)

The Diplomat was a named passenger train of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) during the 1930s–1950s connecting New York City and St. Louis, Missouri, via Washington, D.C. Other B&O trains on the route during that period were the premier National Limited and the workhorse Metropolitan Special. The train was inaugurated in August 1930 after several changes to trains along the St. Louis Route. After World War II, the Diplomat operated as Train No. 3 westbound, and No. 4 eastbound. It was timed to provide connections to several western railroads that terminated in St. Louis, including the Frisco, the Santa Fe, Cotton Belt and Missouri Pacific, among others.

<i>Washington–Chicago Express</i>

The Washington–Chicago Express, an American named passenger train of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O), was one of four daily B&O trains operating between Washington, D.C., and Chicago, Illinois, via Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania during the 1930s–1960s. Other B&O trains of that period on the route were the Capitol Limited, Columbian, and the Shenandoah.

<i>Washingtonian</i> (B&O train)

The Washingtonian was one of two daily American named passenger trains operated by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) during the 1940s–1950s between Baltimore, Maryland and Cleveland, Ohio, via Washington, D.C., and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was the last B&O long-haul passenger train to be powered by a steam locomotive from the venerable railroad's namesake city.

Silver Spring station is a former train station on the Metropolitan Subdivision in Silver Spring in Montgomery County, Maryland. It was built in 1945 by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad on the foundation of a previous station, a Victorian-style brick structure built in 1878. It served intercity trains until 1986 and commuter rail until 2000. Today, it is owned and operated as a museum by Montgomery Preservation, Inc., a non-profit organization.

The Night Express was an American named train of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) on its route between Detroit, Michigan, and Louisville, Kentucky, with major station stops in Toledo, Ohio, and Cincinnati. The service was numbered Train 57 southbound and Train 58 northbound. The numbers 57/58 operated on the Detroit - Cincinnati line as early as 1921. The service was provided in conjunction with the Pere Marquette Railroad from Detroit to Toledo and with the Louisville and Nashville from Cincinnati to Louisville with connections to New Orleans.

Other stations in Muncie served the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, the Muncie Street Railway and the Pennsylvania Railroad.
