Zahira College, Mawanella (also referred to as Mawanella Zahira) is a Muslim selective entry co-educational school in Mawanella, Sri Lanka. The college began as a result of the educational reform that accompanied the 1920 political reforms. It started as a religious school in a cadjan shed belonging to the Hinguloya Masjidul Huda. It is one of the largest Muslim educational institutions in Sri Lanka with more than 4000 students. [1] The college is located in Mawanella next to Masjidul Huda. Zahira means Excellence in Arabic.
The college's origins trace back to the educational reforms associated with the 1920 political changes. Initially a religious school in a cadjan structure affiliated with the Hinguloya Masjidul Huda, the first teacher was V. Samuel from Mannar. On March 23, 1921, it was formally registered as Hinguloya Tamil Mixed School under government oversight, with Dr. A.T.M.A. Azeez as the first recorded student.
A. M. Abdul Rahman Marikkar and A. M. Majeed Marikkar constructed the school's physical infrastructure. However, until 1943, the curriculum only went to grade five. In 1943, a sixth grade was added to the curriculum. D.L.M. Haniffa became a Monitor Teacher in 1928, and under his guidance, the Senior School Certificate (S.S.C.) class began in 1946 with four students, including future Principal M.C.M. Riyal.
M. C. Siddhi Lebbe's 1891 speech at the Maradana Mosque Hall (later the college mosque) urging the Muslim community to promote education led to the Colombo Muslim Educational Society. I.L.M. Abdul Aziz served as the first Secretary, and Arasi Marikar Wapchie Marikar as the first Treasurer and Head Master. With the support of Ahamed Orabi Pasha, Al-Madrasathul Zahira was founded and registered as Maradana Mohammedan Boys School in 1894. Following the establishment of Zahira College, Colombo, Zahira College, Mawanella was founded to further the education of the Muslim community in the region.
Between 1952 and 1957, under Headmaster K.M. Samsudeen, girls were admitted for the first time. The Science Stream was introduced after acquiring a Science Laboratory with the assistance of then Minister of Education, AL Haj. Badiudeen Mahmood. The school became Mawanella Zahira Maha Vidyalaya, and with the appointment of the first graduate teacher, M.I. Haja Ameer, G.C.E A/L classes began around 1963. Al Haj Y.L.M. Razik, a former student and principal, was the first to attend university.
M.I. Haja Ameer became Principal in 1967, adding GCE Advanced Level classes. M.S.A Wahid became principal in 1968, securing electricity and starting Science, Maths, and Commerce A/L classes.
I.L.M. Shihabdeen's principalship (1974-1979) saw the construction of Sir Markan Markar Hall, the school's first two-story building. He recruited graduate teachers and formed the first School Band. M.C.M. Riyal briefly succeeded him, overseeing the construction of the primary section building.
M.S.A. Wahid returned as Principal, constructing a perimeter wall, improving internal roads, and establishing a security service. He reorganized A/L classes and created a playground. Y.L.M. Razik succeeded him, improving academic results and achieving Central College status. Student Mohamed Naleer Mohamed Arafath represented Sri Lanka's Under 19 soccer team at the Colombo SAF Games.
M.I. Ismail focused on community engagement. M.R.M. Zackariya (1996-1997) added a fifth primary class, upgraded the school to National School status, and improved facilities with the help of M.S.M. Kamil. A.K.M. Fouz (1997-1999) addressed school challenges and opened a Dental Clinic. M.H.M. Nizar oversaw the formation of the O.B.A. and O.G.A. M.C. Nizardeen (2000 onwards) introduced numerous improvements, including a Computer Learning Centre, and achieved record A/L results. I Abdul Hakeem brought significant changes before his untimely death. Naeem Marrikkar continued his work, followed by I.A Usana and then the return of Mr. Nizardeen.

Mawanella is a town which belongs to the Kegalle district in the Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka. It lies between Kegalle and Kadugannawa along the Colombo-Kandy road. The area consists of four administrative areas, namely Mawanella, Aranayake, Rambukkana and Hemmathagama.

Sri Lanka's modern educational system modeled after Christian missionary system was brought about by its integration into the British Empire in the 19th century. Education currently falls under the control of both the Central Government and the Provincial Councils, with some responsibilities lying with the Central Government and the Provincial Council having autonomy for others.

Zahira College is an Islamic school at Colombo in Maradana, Sri Lanka. It was founded in 1892 as Al Madrasathul Zahira by Islamic lawyer and educationalist, Muhammad Cassim Siddi Lebbe, with the active patronage of Ahmed Orabi Pasha of Egypt. Tuan Burhanuddin Jayah, was a Sri Lankan educationalist, politician, diplomat and Muslim community leader and considered one of Sri Lanka's national heroes. He started his career as a school teacher and retired after serving 27 years as the principal of Zahira College, Colombo. Under his stewardship, Zahira College became one of the leading schools in the country.

Sheikh Abdullah Ibn Umar Badheeb Al Yamani was an eminent Islamic scholar and Sufi from Hadramout, Yemen. He arrived in Sri Lanka in 1858, and until his death he did many works for Sri Lankan Muslims. Sheikh Umar Badheeb was one of the significant figures among Sri Lankan Muslim leaders and reformers in the 19th century. He contributed significantly to Sri Lankan Muslim education along with M.C. Siddi Lebbe and Orabi Pasha. Sheikh Umar Badheeb also provided spiritual guidance, was the Sufi sheikh and founder of Qadiriyatul Badheebiyya Sufi order.
Deshamanya Al-Haj Badi-ud-din Mahmud was a Sri Lankan politician. He served ten years as Minister of Education and two years as the Minister of Health and Housing.

He made significant contributions across various fields as a lawyer, educationist, scholar, and philosopher. Renowned for his visionary insights, Lebbe was also an accomplished writer and publisher. His role extended beyond these professional spheres, as he was actively involved in social reforms and was a respected leader within the Muslim community of his time."
Wapchie Marikar Abdul Rahman (1868–1933) was a Ceylonese landed proprietor and politician. He was the Unofficial member for the Moor community in the Legislative Council of Ceylon from 1900 to 1915.
