Zhou Tao (born 1976) is a Chinese artist who is based in Guangzhou. [1] His mixed media exhibitions create urban documentaries of intimacy through the prolonged act of looking. [2]

Early life and education

Zhou was born in Changsha, China, in 1976. He received a BFA in oil painting from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 2001 and an MFA in mixed-media studies in 2006. [3]

Work

Zhou's composites from various locations are experiences that present the here and now in different regions. His videos record interactions between people, things, and situations, touching on questions about the multiple trajectories of reality. Zhou has also worked in performance. Zhou's documentary works are in fact rehearsed and costumed assemblies of everyday activity. [4]

After Reality (2013), images juxtapose his home base of Guangzhou and the highly manicured cityscapes of Paris. [5]

Blue and Red (2014), the heavy-metal waste contaminating industrial zones in Shaoguan, China, are compared to a military coup riot in Bangkok.

1234 (2016), [6]

Land of the Throat (2016), commissioned for the Guggenheim Museum, a construction and urban planning site in southern China is shown with research on Mars. [3]

The worldly Cave (2018), Exhibited with Adrian Villar Rojas and presented at Centre Pompidou, Paris it is a reflection on the tensions and breaking points that exist between human production and nature.

Wei Guangqing is a contemporary Chinese painter. He is known most of all for his Red Wall and Made in China Series. Wei Guangqing was one of the main members of the “85’s New Wave Art Movement”. In the 1990s he became one of the most well-known "political Pop artists". His work adopts a flat and symbolic composition, linking traditional ethics and modern culture. “Red Wall” is a symbolic work of pop art, using the traditional woodcarving-illustration prints and stories, through the process of Pop, to imply the various meanings of contemporary private and secular life. Wei Guangqing includes the contradictions of tradition and modernity by using a language related to cartoons and comic strips. His color palette consists of strong, often complementary colors. The artist creates a historical-ethical Pop with regional significance and uses the age-old tradition as a metaphor about today’s world.

<i>San Yuan Li</i> 2003 film by Ou Ning

San Yuan Li is a 2003 experimental independent Chinese documentary directed and produced by artists Ou Ning and Cao Fei. Focusing on the modern paradox of China's rapid economic growth and social marginalization, the film was shot in San Yuan Li, a rural village nestled in the industrial skyline of Guangzhou. The film examines the effects of development on traditional agrarian lifestyles. San Yuan Li was commissioned for and exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 2003.

Catherine Gfeller is a Swiss artist. She currently lives and works in Paris and Southern France after having lived in New York from 1995 to 1999.
