Zion Church is one of the oldest churches in Chintadripet area of Chennai, the capital of the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The original structure was built in Gothic architecture in 1847 by US missionaries. The church is the oldest church built by US missionaries in Chennai. The church also has the second oldest bell in the city.

Zion Church is a working church with hourly prayer and daily services and follows Protestant sect of Christianity. The church also celebrates Harvest festival every year during the month of November. In modern times, it is under the dominion of Diocese of Madras of the Church of South India. It is one of the most prominent landmarks of Chintadripet.

Architecture

The church is built in Gothic architecture. The bell in the church is the second oldest church in the city. It was installed during 1878 and was sent by the Christian Missionary Society church. It was restored in 2008. The inscription in the bell indicates that it was built by J Warner & Sons, London. [1] The pipe organ in the church was manufactured during the last decade of the 19th century and installed in the church in 1895. The instrument was not operational for several years and was restored in 2006 with artisans from England. [2]

As per historian Muthiah, the church is the oldest church built by US missionaries in Chennai and also has the second oldest bell in the city. The church was built as a smaller one by Dr. John Scudder and Rev. Miron Winslow the American missionary returning from Jaffna, Sri Lanka. The church was sold to Church Mission Society of London in 1878 at Rs. 10,000. [3] As per another account, the church was founded in 1734 by governor George Mortin Pith. He is believed to have settled 230 weaver families beside the Cooum river to produce cotton fabric. The church was reconstructed in 2003 at a cost of Rs 50 lakh. [1]

Worship practises

The second pastor of the church was Rev. WT Sathianathan in 1862. The family continued for five generations with WD Clarke, the son-in-law of Sathianathan after 30 years of his service. Clarke was followed by his son Samuel Clarke, who was in turn continued by his son Sundar Clarke. [3] In modern times, the Church is administered by the Diocese of Madras of the Church of South India. Mass is performed in the church from Monday to Friday on 8 a.m., 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturdays and 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Sundays. [4] The festival of the temple is celebrated during the Christmas times for eight days, starting with flag hoisting on 24 December and ending with a feast and religious lectures. [5]

Christianity in Tamil Nadu

Christianity in the state of Tamil Nadu, India is the second largest religion in the state. According to tradition, St. Thomas, one of the twelve apostles, landed in Malabar Coast in 52 CE. In the colonial age many Portuguese, Dutch, British and Italian Christians came to Tamil Nadu. St Marys Co-Cathedral

St. Mary's Co-Cathedral, is a Catholic church in Armenian Street, Chennai, India. Constructed by Capuchins in 1658, it is one of the oldest churches in the former British India. For a long time Cathedral of the diocese it received the title of co-cathedral when the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madras and Mylapore was transferred to San Thome Basilica.

Queenship of Mary Church parish in Chintadripet, Chennai, India, was started in 1904 when it was known as St. Lazarus Church. Earlier, it had been a sub-station of St. Anthony's Church, Pudupet. A new church was built in 1952 with the name Queenship of Mary; it was consecrated on 18, December 1955 by Auxiliary Bishop Francis Arthur Carvalho, of Madras and Mylapore. Royapuram fire temple, Chennai

Jal Phiroj Clubwala Dar E Meher, popularly known as the Royapuram fire temple, is a Zoroastrian fire temple at Royapuram, Chennai, India. It was built in 1910 and donated to the Madras Parsi Zarthosti Anjuman by philanthropist Phiroj M. Clubwala. The temple is one of the 177 odd fire temples in the world, of which some 150 are in India. It is the only Parsi fire temple in Tamil Nadu and surrounding region, including Puducherry and Kerala. The flame in the temple is burning continuously ever since the temple was built and is stoked five times a day by the priest.

St. Thomas Garrison Church is one of the oldest churches in the St. Thomas Mount area of Chennai, the capital of the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The Church was built by the British government at the request of the army officers in the area in 1830. The church was constructed with bomb-proof roof and rust-proof iron railings, and most of the materials for the construction were imported from Britain. It is located in the foothills of St. Thomas Mount and named after St. Thomas, one of the twelve apostles who resided at the place during his final years.

Zion Church, Tharangambadi Church in Mayiladuthurai district, India

Zion Church is one of the oldest churches in Tharangambadi (Tranquebar), a Danish settlement in Nagapattinam district in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is in the premises of Fort Dansborg, built in the land ceded by Thanjavur king Ragunatha Nayak in an agreement with Danish Admiral Ove Gjedde in 1620 and acted as the base for Danish settlement in the region during the early 17th century. The Church was built in 1701 A.D by Rev. Bartholomaus Ziegenbalg and has records from the 18th and 19th centuries. He is believed to be the first Protestant missionary in India and the Church is believed to be the first Protestant Church in India.

CSI-Garrison Wesley Church located in Trimulgherry is among the oldest churches in Secunderabad under the auspices of the Protestant Church of South India (CSI) within the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Diocese of Medak. Situated in Lal Bazar civilian area of the Secunderabad Cantonment, the CSI-Garrison Wesley Church is in near vicinity of the Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (MCEME), and the church has continued to attract not only its regular worshipers but also the new visitors from the nearby military stations of the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force through its regular Sunday Mass as well as its annual Good Friday, Easter and Christmas programmes.
