Les Sables-d'Olonne is a seaside town in Western France, on the Atlantic Ocean. A subprefecture of the department of Vendée, Pays de la Loire, it has the administrative level of commune. On 1 January 2019, the municipalities of Olonne-sur-Mer, Château-d'Olonne and Les Sables-d'Olonne merged, retaining the latter name.

Georges Balandier was a French sociologist, anthropologist and ethnologist noted for his research in Sub-Saharan Africa. Balandier was born in Aillevillers-et-Lyaumont. He was a professor at the Sorbonne, and is a member of the Center for African Studies, a research center of the École pratique des hautes études. He held for many years the Editorship of Cahiers Internationaux de Sociologie and edited the series Sociologie d'Aujourd'hui at Presses Universitaires de France. He died on 5 October 2016 at the age of 95.

The 1996–1997 Vendée Globe is a non-stop solo Round the World Yacht Race for IMOCA 50 and IMOCA 60 class yachts this is the third edition of the race starting on the th November 1996 from Les Sables-d'Olonne.
The IMOCA 60 Class yacht Bagages Superior 101 was designed by Group Finot and launched in 1992 after being built by CDK Technologies based in Lorient, France. The boat was the only ketch rig to win the Vendee Globe for later races the mizzen was removed but the boat is now based in Poland.
The IMOCA 60 Class yacht PRB 4 was designed by Lauriot-Prévost and G. Verdier and launched in the 2010 after being assembled by CDK Technologies based in Lorient, France. The hull was moulded in those of Safran and manufactured at the Larros Shipyard in Gujan Mestras under the direction of Thierry Elluère. The deck will was made at CDK technologies in Port la Forêt. In Italy, near Milan, Refraschini manufacture the internal structure of the boat. The initial keel was made by AMPM, Mothe Achard.
