Štiavnické vrchy Protected Landscape Area (Slovak : Chránená krajinná oblasť Štiavnické vrchy) is one of the 14 protected landscape areas in Slovakia. It is situated in the Banská Štiavnica, Zvolen, Žiar nad Hronom, Žarnovica, Levice and Krupina districts.

Slovak or less frequently Slovakian is a West Slavic language. It is called slovenský jazyk or slovenčina in the language itself.

The capital and largest city is Bratislava, and the second largest city is Košice. The official language is Slovak.

Banská Štiavnica District is a district in the Banská Bystrica Region of central Slovakia. Until 1918, most of the present-day district belonged to the county of Kingdom of Hungary of Hont, apart from Močiar and Podhorie in the north (Tekov) and Kozelník in the east.

History

The park was created on 22 September 1979. Protected areas declared before include Banskoštiavnická botanická záhrada (Banská Štiavnica Botanical Garden) (1958),^[1] Kamenné more near Vyhne (1923),^[2] and Sitno (1951).^[3]

Vyhne is a village in the Žiar nad Hronom District, which is part of the Banská Bystrica Region in central Slovakia.

Geography, geology and biology

The PLA's territory is set in the Štiavnické vrchy range, which is a range of volcanic origin and is the biggest one in Slovakia. Beech, oak and fir trees grow in the area. The park protects the natural elements as well as the monuments associated with historic mining activities. Artificial water reservoirs called tajchy were built in the 17th and 18th centuries to provide energy for the mines in Banská Štiavnica; at their height, there were 60 of them. Twenty-four survived to the 21st century and are used for recreation. Along with the town, they are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Štiavnica Mountains are a volcanic mountain range southern central Slovakia. They are part of Inner Western Carpathians and the Slovenské stredohorie Mountains. The area is protected by Štiavnica Mountains Protected Landscape Area.

Tajchy are artificial water reservoirs in the Štiavnica Mountains, in central Slovakia. Most of them were built in order to provide energy for the silver mines of Banská Štiavnica in the 18th century. At their height, tajchy comprised a sophisticated system of 60 reservoirs, connected to each other by more than 100 km of channels and underground tunnels.

During the period of Communist Czechoslovakia, the village had to use a "non-religious" name: Antol. The first mention of Svätý Anton in written sources dates to 1266, when the village was owned by the Hont-Pázmány family of the Čabraď Castle. The last private owner was Ferdinand I of Bulgaria.

Kysuce Protected Landscape Area is one of the 14 protected landscape areas in Slovakia. It is made of two separate parts, the Javorníky mountains in the west, and Kysucké Beskydy mountains in the east, in north-western Slovakia. It is situated in the Čadca and Kysucké Nové Mesto districts, within the Kysuce region. Botanical Garden of the Comenius University is the only botanical garden in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. It is located in the Karlova Ves borough, next to the Old Town district and the Lafranconi Bridge by the Bratislava Riverfront and it contains over 4,000 plant species covering an area of 6.6 hectares.
