Elections to Liverpool City Council were held on 6 May 1980.

Contents

Following boundary changes, the entire council was up for election (3 Councillors for each ward). The candidates with the highest number of votes in each ward were elected until 1984, the candidates with the second highest number of votes were elected until 1983 and the candidates with the third highest number of votes were elected until 1982.

This was an 'all up' election following boundary changes which extended the area of the city and increased the number of wards from 16 to 28. Three councillors were elected for each ward. The election also marked the end of Liverpool's directly-elected mayoralty. After the election the council reverted to having a leader of the council chosen from amongst the councillors instead. Labour retained control of the council and their group leader Liam Robinson became leader of the council after the election.
