Local elections will be held in Makati on May 12, 2025, within the general election. The voters will vote for the elective local posts in the city: the mayor, vice mayor, the lone congressional district, and a total of twelve councilors, six per district. This will be the first general (nationwide and local) elections in Makati since losing ten Embo barangays to Taguig as a result of the Makati–Taguig boundary dispute ruling.

Background

Incumbent Mayor Abigail Binay and incumbent Vice Mayor Monique Lagdameo will be term-limited in 2025. They were first elected in 2016 and were re-elected in 2019 and in 2022. [1] [2] [3] [4]

First District Rep. Romulo "Kid" Peña Jr. is currently on his second term and is eligible to run for a third term.

Second District Rep. Luis Angel Jose Campos will be term-limited in 2025. There is no final announcement yet about his plans for the upcoming elections, but his wife, Mayor Binay, sees him as her successor for Makati mayor. [5] Meanwhile, his sister-in-law, incumbent Senator Nancy Binay, will also be term-limited in 2025, hinting possibility of running as mayor as "50 percent" as her final decision is yet to come. [6] This led to the speculation and anticipation of possible Binay-Campos face off in 2025.

In early 2024, Mayor Abigail Binay had a meeting with former Taguig Mayor Sigfrido Tiñga. [7] This has stirred speculations about her political plans in 2025. She is considering running as mayor of Taguig, but her final decision is yet to come. [8] [9] [10] This speculation was first initiated after Makati lost ten Embo barangays to Taguig. Makati lost 10 barangays after the Supreme Court's decision in favor to Taguig. [11]

In addition, some issues of the reapportionment of the districts of Makati and Taguig are still pending to be resolved following the Supreme Court ruling. [12] Makati might lose one congressional seat because its 2nd district has three barangays remaining in the city, falling short of the constitutional requirement of 250,000 people. [13] [14]
