Ardhi University also known as ARU (Chuo Kikuu cha Ardhi, in Swahili) is a public university located in Makongo in Kinondoni District of Dar es Salaam Region, Tanzania.^[1] It was established 28 March 2007, though it has been offering training for more than 60 years in different status. It is situated on Observation Hill close to University of Dar es Salaam, in which it was a constituent college from 1996 to 2007, when it was known as University College of Lands and Architectural Studies—UCLAS. Prior being part of University of Dar es Salaam, Ardhi University was known as Ardhi Institute with history extending to mid-1950s.^[2]

History

The university was established under University Act No 7 of 2005, and came into being after the signing of Ardhi University Charter by the President of United Republic of Tanzania, Jakaya Kikwete on 28 March 2007. The roots of Ardhi University can be traced back to pre-independence days when a Surveying Training School offering technician certificate courses in land surveying was established in Dar es Salaam.

In 1974, the name was changed to Ardhi Institute and its range of courses expanded to include building design and building economics. In the early 1980s, the public health engineering course (later renamed ‘environmental engineering’) was introduced. In 1996 the Ardhi Institute became a constituent college of the University of Dar es Salaam, and ten years later was granted autonomy as Ardhi University. During the decade of association with the University of Dar es Salaam, the Ardhi Institute grew dramatically: the number of academic programmes on offer increased from six to 39, while the number of students grew from 400 to 1,400.^[3]

In 1979, the Centre for Housing Studies was established as joint project between the governments of Tanzania and the Netherlands. The centre has now grown into the Institute of Human Settlement Studies, which is involved in the ‘regularisation of informal settlements’, with which Dar es Salaam is plentifully endowed.^[4]

St. Augustine University of Tanzania (SAUT) is a private university in Mwanza, Tanzania. It was founded by the Catholic Bishops of Tanzania in 1998 as a secular, nonprofit, private institution. Before 1998, SAUT was called first Nyegezi Social Training Centre and then Nyegezi Social Training Institute. SAUT has over 10,000 students with an anticipated minimal rise each new academic year. The Open University of Tanzania (OUT) (Swahili: Chuo Kikuu Huria cha Tanzania) is a distance learning public university in Tanzania and the largest by the number of students. It was established by an Act of Parliament No. 17 of 1992. It is a single mode institution offering certificate, diploma and degree courses through distance learning. Its headquarters is situated in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and conducts its operations through 30 Regional Centres and 70 Study Centres. The university has a capacity of approximately 70,000 students both local and international ones.

The Dar es Salaam University College of Education (DUCE) is a constituent college of the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. DUCE is located in Miburani ward, Temeke municipality close to Tanzania National Stadium. It is one of the higher learning institutions in Tanzania established in 2005 as part of the Tanzanian Government development policy to extend secondary school education in Tanzania. The core activities of the college is teaching, conducting research and offering public consultation.

The Mkwawa University College of Education (MUCE) is a constituent college of the University of Dar es Salaam in Iringa, Tanzania. The College was established in 2005 following the upgrading of the former Mkwawa High School in response to the growing demand for teachers in the country. Since its establishment in 2005, MUCE has achieved various remarkable milestones, including the increase in students’ enrolment, number of both academic and administrative staff along with their notable development to Master's and PhD levels. Moreover, the College has undergone massive infrastructural development and established various postgraduate programmes namely; Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) which is offered by the Faculty of Education, Master of Science with Education (M.Sc.Ed) by the Faculty of Science and Master of Arts with Education (M.A.Ed) offered by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Institute of Finance Management (IFM) is a public Institute in Tanzania established in 1972. It stands as the oldest higher learning financial institution in Tanzania. The institute has been involved in teaching, research, and consultancy.

Tolly Salvatory Augustine Mbwette was a Tanzanian academic, engineer and educator. He held various positions in national and international institutions of higher learning over his lifetime, including that of vice chancellor of the Open University of Tanzania. He was a team leader for various multi-disciplinary research teams responsible for both drinking and wastewater treatment systems that rely on bio-systems.

Kitila Alexander Kanyama Mkumbo is a Tanzanian politician and an academic professor.

Henry M. Rimisho is a Tanzanian Architect and Lecturer from the Department of Architecture, School of Architecture, Construction, Economics and Management at Ardhi University in Dar es Salaam. He is also a Missionary priest from the Congregation of The Apostles of Jesus based in Nairobi, Kenya.
