The FederalUniversity of Agriculture, Makurdi (UAM) renamed Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi, Benue State is a higher education institution in Makurdi, Benue State, Nigeria. [1] [2]

The university was established in 1988, following the recommendations of a 1987 federal government White Paper on Higher Education curriculum and development in Nigeria. [3] The vice-chancellor is Professor Anande Richard Kimbir, [4] and the chancellor is the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu Gambari CFR. [5] On 14 July 2019, President Muhammadu Buhari approved a bill renaming it the Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University. [6]

Faculties

The University of Agriculture, Makurdi has over 30 departments in ten colleges:

For outreach and public service support, UAM has established a Co-operative Extension Centre (CEC) and a Centre for Food and Agricultural Strategy (CEFAS) which focus on practical agricultural extension liaison support and public policy support services, respectively.

Research and extension programmes

The Cooperative Extension Centre through its training and extension liaison services coordinates the outreach programmes. The Centre for Food and Agricultural Strategy coordinates the public service support in food and agriculture. UAM is forming links to ensure that agricultural technologies and the output of its research reach average small-scale Nigerian farmers, the intended beneficiaries of the university's research and extension programmes.

Institutional links are being forged with federal and state Ministries of Agriculture and other related agencies to identify areas of collaboration and technical support from the University. The university has been involved with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture in research on the socio-economic aspects of soybean production. [7] The university is making its presence felt in Benue State through such collaborative programme and protects. Training programmes are being conducted for participants from other states.

Samuel Ioraer Ortom is a Nigerian politician, businessman, administrator and philanthropist. He was a Minister of State Trade and Investments in Nigeria during the presidency of Goodluck Jonathan. Ortom was elected governor of Benue State as a member of the All Progressives Congress in 2015, though later defecting to the People's Democratic Party. He was re-elected as governor on 29 May 2019. Ortom's tenure ended on 29 May 2023, succeeded by a Catholic priest of the opposition party, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia.

Ochapa C. Onazi is a Professor of Agricultural Education and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, Nigeria. Ochapa Onazi was educated at the Boys’ Secondary School, Gindiri, and the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology, Zaria. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science (BSc) and Master of Science (MSc) from the University of London and a Diploma from Imperial College (DIC) London. Ochapa Onazi graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Agricultural Education from Kansas State University, United States of America (USA), where he was supervised by Professor Robert Johnson.

Ibrahim Kolapo Sulu Gambari Dan Bawa is the 11th and current Emir of Ilorin. He is the traditional ruler of the Fulani Emirate of Ilorin. He ascended to the throne in 1995 succeeding his uncle Aliyu Dan Abdulkadir. He is the Chairman of Kwara State Traditional Rulers Council. He is one of the 10 prominent traditional rulers in northern Nigeria.

James Ortese Iorzua Ayatse, Tor Tiv V from Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State in central Nigeria is a Nigerian academic who is the Paramount Ruler/King of Tiv Nation and president, Tiv Area Traditional Council and chairman, Benue State council of Chiefs. He previously served as the vice chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi and the pioneer vice chancellor of the Federal University, Dutsin-Ma respectively before succeeding Alfred Akawe Torkula, Tor Tiv IV, who ruled from 1991 until his death on 22 November 2015.

Eno James Ibanga is a Nigerian academic. He is a professor of solid state physics/materials science. He serves as the Vice Chancellor for Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU). On 3 August 2020, His Excellency Governor Udom Gabriel Emmanuel appointed Professor Eno James Ibanga as commissioner in the state ministry works & Fire service. He is married and blessed with children.

Msugh Moses Kembe is an academic and the 5th substantive Vice chancellor of Benue State University. He was appointed by Benue state governor Dr. Samuel Ortom and assumed office on November 3, 2015.

Dickson Dominic Tarkighir is a Nigerian politician. He is a member of the 10th Nigeria National Assembly of the Nigerian House of Representatives representing Makurdi/Guma Federal Constituency. He was also a member of the 8th National Assembly and a member of the ECOWAS parliament.
