History

Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, is a Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion University. It was founded as a CMS Training Institution in Abeokuta in 1853. It relocated from Lagos to Oyo in 1920.

Initially, it was a Grade II Teachers' Certificate college. St. Andrews College, Oyo started a Divinity Course from 1910 to 1942. Ownership transitioned from the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion to government control in 1977. It became an NCE campus in 1980 and a College of Education in 1985.

St. Andrews College became a university on September 7, 1999, with the Church of Nigeria approving SACOBA's proposal. Ajayi Crowther University was established on the premises of the former St. Andrews College. The university obtained its license on January 7, 2005, from the National Universities Commission.

The University was named after Samuel Ajayi Crowther, an African bishop and Bible translator, who translated Bibles to Yoruba Language and other African languages. [5]

Ajayi Crowther University provides bachelor's degree courses spanning agriculture, engineering, science and technology, arts, management, social science, and law.The university offers accommodation, infrastructure, and tuition with fees ranging from N600,000 to N700,000. The JAMB/UTME cut-off mark for admission is set at 160. [6]

Library

T.Y. Danjuma Library is the library for Ajayi Crowther University. This was established in a building inherited from St. Andrew's College in 2006 [13] and was relocated to its current site on January 4, 2010. [13] The library's holdings are categorized into Humanities, Management/Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences. [13] The library comprises 20,000 book volumes and 50 journal titles both foreign and local. [13]

Ajayi Crowther University was ranked 89th in university rankings in the country 2023. [14]

Course approval

In February 2021, the National University Commission approved new courses in the university - law LLM, entrepreneur, medical laboratories, radiography and radiation science, as well as other courses at the university undergraduate level. [15]

In November 2022, The National University Commission (NUC) approved a nursing program for the university. In correspondence signed by Dr Saliu from Academic Planning and directed to the Vice-Chancellor, the Commission communicated its endorsement for the university to initiate a full-time nursing program in Oyo, where they proposed a college of medicine. [16]

Admission requirements

Aspirants seeking admission into Ajayi Crowther University Oyo state must have chosen the university as their first choice in the country's Joint Admission Matriculation Board (UTME ) (JAMB) and score a 180 mark in all relevant subjects. They must have 5 credits passed in WAEC, NECO and NABTEB including English language, mathematics and other relevant subjects in not more than two sittings and must be 16 years of age. [17]

Matriculation

In May 2022, Ajay Crowder University matriculated 721 students for the 2021/2022 matriculation session. The vice chancellor in the matriculation message to the newly admitted students warned the students against exam malpractice and immoral acts in the university. [18]

On 19 May 2023, the vice chancellor, Prof. Timothy Adebayo, advised the newly admitted students to shun immoral behaviours at the school. He also announced that the number of students matriculated was 1200. He mentioned that those students were enrolled across 11 faculties for the academic year 2022/2023. Additionally, he emphasized the institution's commitment to cultivating graduates with both intellectual and good moral behaviour to meet the challenges of the global market. [19]

Partnership on agriculture

The Jubaili Agricultural Company is poised to partner with Ajayi Crowther University Seeds, the seed company of Ajayi Crowther University in Oyo State. The dean of the faculty of agriculture welcomes the members of the firm in other to improve the rate of production of seed and assist farmers. This collaboration aims to offer farmers both consultancy services and easy access to agricultural products. [20] [21]

Award

In December 2023 the one of the performing art student won theatre student award that took place in Lagos. [22]

Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo also known as FCE OYO was established on 5 October 1977, as Federal Advanced Teacher's college (Special). The College is the only one of its kind in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa. It has the largest conglomeration of disabled students that could be found in any Higher Institution in Nigeria and the largest concentration of specialized facilities for teaching and training of teachers of the Handicapped in Nigeria. During its 40th anniversary celebration, the college gave special recognition award to former President Olusegun Obasanjo whose military administration brought about the upgrading of the Institution from the then Federal Advanced Teachers College to a College of Education with the mandate to award the National Certificate of Education (NCE) in 1977.

Dapo Folorunsho Asaju is an academician and also the Bishop Theologian of the Anglican Church of Nigeria and the former vice chancellor of Ajayi Crowther University. Dapo was appointed by the Governing council of Ajayi Crowther University.

KolaDaisi University also known as KDU, is a private University in Ibadan, Oyo State. The university was founded by Chief KolaDaisi, CON, Bashorun of Ibadan as its Proprietor. It is associated with the KolaDaisi Foundation (KDF). KolaDaisi University (KDU), after approval by the Federal Executive Council, was licensed by the National Universities Commission to operate as a private university in November 2016.
