Godfrey Okoye University (GO University) was founded in 2009 by the Very Reverend Father Professor Dr. Christian Anieke for the Catholic Diocese of Enugu. [1] The university, which got its operational licence on 3 November 2009 from the National Universities Commission (NUC), belongs to the Catholic Diocese of Enugu in Nigeria. It is the first university owned by a Catholic Diocese in Africa.

In 2009 the university started with 215 students [2] and admitted 1,200 students by the end of 2012. [3]

On 1 December 2013, GOU commenced a week-long programme of activities to celebrate its maiden convocation. 100 students were awarded bachelor's degrees during the final ceremony on 7 December 2013. [4]

GOU is a member of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVC). [5]

On 27 October 2014 the radio station for the Mass Communication Department was formally commissioned by Prof. Armstrong Idachaba, director of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

GO Uni Radio 106.9fm [14] broadcasts live and via Internet [15] from their studios at Godfrey Okoye University, Thinkers Corner, Enugu.

Madonna University is the first Catholic university in Nigeria. It was accredited by National Universities Commission. Madonna University Nigeria has three campuses that are located in Elele - Rivers State, Okija - Anambra State and Akpugo - Enugu State. The campuses have different Faculties with Departments. The Okija campus in Anambra state has the following Faculties: Management and Social Sciences; Arts and Education, and Law. The Elele campus has Faculties of Medicine and Surgery, Pharmacology. The Akpugo campus has Faculty of Engineering. These campuses have their main libraries as well as libraries attached to Faculties and the Departments. The university graduates first class, second class and third class students. The university also has a postgraduate program and part-time program that runs on Fridays and Saturdays.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) is a government commission for promoting quality higher education in Nigeria. Situated in Abuja, it was established in 1962 as an advisory agency in the cabinet office. In 1974, it became a statutory body and its first executive secretary was professor Jibril Aminu. NUC is currently part of the Federal Ministry of Education and is a parastatal.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Godfrey Okoye</span>

Godfrey Mary Paul Okoye, C.S.Sp. was a bishop of the Roman Catholic Church in Nigeria. He was the first Bishop of Port Harcourt, serving from 3 September 1961 to 7 March 1970. After leaving the diocese of Port Harcourt, he became the second Bishop of Enugu, succeeding Bishop John Cross Anyogu.

Christian Anieke is a Nigerian Roman Catholic priest and the founding Vice Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, Nigeria. Ordained a priest in 2000, he is a professor of English Language and Studies. From 2006 to 2009, he was Provost of the Institute of Ecumenical Education. He became the Vice Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University, which is owned by the Catholic Diocese of Enugu in Nigeria, in 2009. He is also the director of the university's Institute of Chinua Achebe Studies.
