Igbinedion University, Okada (IUO) is a privately owned university located in Okada, the headquarters of Ovia North-East Local Government Area in Edo State, Nigeria.

Established on 10 May 1999 by Sir Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion CFR, IUO holds the distinction of being the first licensed a Private University in Nigeria s certified by the Federal Government of Nigeria. The university's Certificate of approval, No. 001, was granted by the Federal Government.

History and foundation

The institution officially opened its doors to foundation students on 15 October 1999. Sir Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, a philanthropist and prominent figure in Benin City, provided the visionary leadership that gave rise to IUO's establishment. [1]

Academic accreditation

The university's programs, both at the graduate and undergraduate levels, have received accreditation from the prestigious National Universities Commission (NUC). [2] [3] Additionally, the university's programs align with the requirements set forth by relevant professional bodies. [4] [5]

Leadership and governance

The late Professor Anthony Uyekpen Osagie served as the inaugural Substantive Vice-Chancellor from 29 October 1999 to 30 November 2003. Professor Nduka Uraih, who held the position of Deputy Vice Chancellor, subsequently assumed the role of Acting Vice Chancellor from December 2003 to 11 September 2004. Notably, Rev. Professor Eghosa Osaghae assumed the position of the second substantive Vice Chancellor, a role he held until June 2018 when Prof. Lawrence Ezemwonye assumed the mantle of leadership. [7]

Achievements and international engagements

A notable milestone is IUO's distinction as the first Private University in Sub-Saharan Africa to produce medical doctors.

Partnerships with institutions such as the University of Westminster (UK) and Howard University (USA) facilitate collaborative endeavors in various academic disciplines. Furthermore, IUO's membership in organizations like the Global University Network for Innovation (GUNI) and participation in the Network Towards Unity for Health (NUFH) demonstrate its active engagement on the global educational stage. Reputation

Over 10,000 people have graduated from various undergraduate and postgraduate programs at the University. Since its establishment in 1999, it has worked for prominent firms both within and outside of Nigeria. [9] It has also received support from people and organizations such as the Central Bank of Nigeria, which funded the creation of an ultra-modern library for the school, and former Chief of Air Staff Air Marshall Paul Dike, who gave a complex. Sunusi Mamman was the vice chancellor of Umaru Musa Yar'adua University from 2017 to December 15, 2022. His appointment as the university's substantive vice chancellor came after the tenure of Professor Idris Isa Funtua expired. Professor Sunusi Mamman was once the acting vice chancellor of the university from February to June 2015 and the deputy vice chancellor (administration) of the university from 2014 to 2016. A professor of special needs education with special interest in cognitive exceptionalities. His reign as acting vice chancellor was characterised by massive structural development which gave rise to the utilisation of the 2013 Needs Assessment funds of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (tetfund) that financed for the constructions of additional male and female hostels, Post Graduate Students Hostel and other developmental structures. He also introduced several constructions in all the five faculties of the university. He sponsored academic and non-teaching staff to pursue higher degrees in many universities at home and abroad thereby boosting the workforce in the university.

Damilola Sunday Olawuyi, SAN, FCIArb, is an international jurist, professor of law, arbitrator, author and policy consultant, with expertise in petroleum, mining, energy and environmental law. He is the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, Nigeria. Professor Olawuyi was promoted to the rank of Full Professor of Law at the age of 32 years, becoming one of the youngest full professors of law in Nigerian history. He became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 2020, aged thirty-seven, becoming the youngest academic ever elevated to the rank of a senior advocate of Nigeria.

Anita Ukah is a Nigerian model, entrepreneur and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned as the winner of the 2018 edition of the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria pageant. She represented Nigeria at the 2018 Miss World pageant held on 8 December 2018 at the Sanya City Arena in Sanya, China, where she came in Top 30 at the Miss World competition.

Ahman Pategi University, Patigi is one of the twenty new private universities in Nigeria that was approved for establishment by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in February, 2021.

Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye is a Nigerian Professor of Ecotoxicology and Environmental Forensics. He assumed office as the Vice Chancellor of Igbinedion University, Okada in 2018. Prior to being appointed a Vice Chancellor, Ezemonye served as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Benin, Benin City.

Pastor Chris Oyakhilome Teaching Hospital formerly known as Igbinedion University Teaching Hospital is a medical facility located in Okada, Edo State, Nigeria. It is affiliated with Igbinedion University and serves as a significant center for medical education, patient care, and research in the region.
