Esan North-East is a Local Government Area located in Edo State of Nigeria. It has an estimated population of 119,346. [1] Its headquarters are in Uromi/Uzea.

It has an area of 338 km2 (131 sq mi) and a population density of 472.8 inhabitants per square kilometre (1,225/sq mi) (2016). [2]

There are 15 secondary schools and 35 private primary schools. Among these schools are the Our Ladies of Lourd, Girls College, and Onewa Technical College. [4]

Esan North-East is bordered with Atani by Ubiaja, Ebhoiyi by Igueben, Ivue and Obeidu by Irrua, Uzea by Afemai, Amendokhian by Ugboha with towns in all its surroundings.

Government

The North-East Local Government Area is divided into two constituencies. Constituency 1 comprises Wards 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, while constituency 2 comprises Wards 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10, making a total of 10 political wards represented by two representatives in the Edo State House of Assembly. [5]

Religion

The people of Esan North-East include Christians, Migrated Muslims and African traditionalists. Before the Europeans, there existed some of the oldest examples in Africa of African traditional religion.

In 1908, Christianity came to Uromi in Esan North-East through the evangelism of a Roman Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Joseph Corbeau, a European missionary who was residing then at Ubiaja (seat of Esan-South-East Local Government Area). The people of Uromi, in support of the traditional monarch Ogbidi Okojie, accepted the new religion and after a period of catechetical instruction and evangelism, built a church on land donated by the monarch and his council of Chiefs. [21]

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Uromi in Uromi, Edo State, Nigeria was created on December 14, 2005, when it was split off from the Archdiocese of Benin City. It is a suffragan diocese of the Archdiocese of Benin City. Its first bishop was Augustine Obiora Akubeze. The St Anthony of Padua church in Uromi was selected to be its cathedral. The canonical erection of the diocese and the episcopal ordination of the bishop took place on Saturday, February 25, 2006.

The Esan people are an ethnic group of southern Nigeria who speak the Esan language. The Esan are traditionally known to be agriculturalists, trado-medical practitioners, mercenary warriors and hunters. They cultivate palm trees, Irvingia gabonensis (erhonhiele), Cherry (Otien), bell pepper (akoh) coconut, betel nut, kola nut, black pear, avocado pear, yams, cocoyam, cassava, maize, rice, beans, groundnut, bananas, oranges, plantains, sugar cane, tomato, potato, okra, pineapple, paw paw, and various vegetables.

Agba N'Ojieof Uromi, originally called Agba, was the ruler of the Esan people from 1483 AD until 1507 AD. He is an important Onojie in the history of the Esan people. He was instrumental in the independence of Esanland from the old Benin Empire. He stopped tributes from Enijies in Esanland from being paid to the Oba of Benin and stopped any appeal cases being taken from Esanland to the Oba's Palace for retrial during the time of Ozolua n'Ibarmoi.

Air Vice Marshal Anthony Ebehijele Okpere is a retired Nigerian Airforce Officer, former Managing Director of Nigerian Airways and Minister of Aviation and member of the Federal Executive Council in 1987.

Robert Sylvester Okojie is a Nigerian-American engineer.

Peter Enahoro was a Nigerian journalist, author, businessman and publisher. Also known by the pen name of "Peter Pan" because of his popular column in New African magazine under that name. He has been described as "perhaps Africa's best known international journalist".
