The Banaras Hindu University Students' Union generally abbreviated as BHU Students' Union or BHUSU, was the students' union of Banaras Hindu University. The Students' Union had been responsible for representing students, both within the University and externally for all academic, non-academic and student welfare purposes. [1]
Banaras Hindu University Students' Union was established in the early 20th century (exact year not known). In its entire existence, the Students' Union has been suspended and banned several times. Its structure has also been changed from Students' union to Students' council and vice versa. The Students' Union in the Banaras Hindu University has a precedence of violence, strikes, lockdowns, expulsions, rioting and deaths. [1] [2] [3] [4]
In 1958, The Banaras Hindu University witnessed a students' strike. This resulted in banning of the BHU Students' Union for a period of eight years; from 1958 to 1966. [3]
In the early 1990s, when professor R. P. Rastogi was the Vice-Chancellor of the Banaras Hindu University, another student strike took place which resulted in banning of the BHU Students' Union. [3]
The student union was banned abruptly when large-scale violence paralyzed the university campus on 20 February 1997. A student was killed during a blatant display of firearms while an election rally was underway at the amphitheater ground. [5] The then Vice-Chancellor of the University Dr. Hari Gautam ordered an indefinite ban on union elections within the campus and disbanded the student wings of political parties (ABVP, SFI, NSUI, etc.). In order to curb the violence and lawlessness, the VC appointed Professor Omkar Nath Singh of Department of Geography and empowered the proctorial office by tripling the amount of funds it was allocated. To this date, an ordinary student at the university associates the student union with utter lawlessness and pompous display of power which serves no apparent purpose. [2] [3] VC Simhadri introduced new practice where professors were asked to sign to their presence in the attendance register everyday because some were working elsewhere despite being on the payroll of the university. He also expelled more than 50 students (many of whom were even gold medalists) on criminal charges. [6] The University did not witness any violence, stirke or dharnas since then. Shakti Sharan Singh was the last student union leader .
In 2011, the Students' Union was replaced by a "Students' Council". Vikas Singh was elected as First General Secretary of BHU Students Council. [7] He was removed on 7 April 2012 from his post for allegedly giving false information in his affidavit during university elections. [8] On 30 April 2012 university reinstated Vikas Singh as the Students Council General Secretary following an order by the Allahabad High Court. [9]
Unlike the Students' Union where the president was elected directly, in the Students' Council, every class elected its representative and the elected representatives in-turn elected the General Secretary (and other office bearers). [1]
In Aug 2013, the Students' Council was disbanded and the University administration; based on the directions of Supreme Court of India (which was based on recommendations from Lyngdoh Committee [10] section 6.2) decided to re-introduce the "Students' Union". [1] [11]
In Oct 2014, some students went on hunger strike, demanding student union elections. Instead of union election council election dates were subsequently announced on 11 November 2014 and the process was due to be completed by 30 November 2014. However, the elections had to be cancelled and the Students' Council had to be kept on hold due to violence, arson and clashes between students and police. [2] [12]
Elections were not held in 2015 and 2016, following ban introduced in 2014.

Currently, BHU does not have an active political student union, but an administrative student council called the Banaras Hindu University Students Council to represent and safeguard the interests of the students. [13] [14]
Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is a collegiate, central, and research university located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India, and founded in 1916. The university incorporated the Central Hindu College, founded by Indian Home Rule-leaguer and Theosophist, Annie Besant in 1898. After Besant and her associates were marginalised, the university was established by Madan Mohan Malaviya with the support of the maharaja of Darbhanga Rameshwar Singh, the maharaja of Benares Prabhu Narayan Singh, and the lawyer Sunder Lal. With over 30,000 students, and 18,000 residing on campus, BHU is the largest residential university in Asia. The university is one of the eight public institutions declared as an Institute of Eminence by the Government of India. It is also one of the 12 institutions from India in BRICS Universities League, a consortium of leading research universities from BRICS countries.
Jagjivan Ram, known popularly as Babuji, was an Indian independence activist and politician from Bihar. He was instrumental in the foundation of the All India Depressed Classes League, an organisation dedicated to attaining equality for untouchables, in 1935 and was elected to Bihar Legislative Assembly in 1937, after which he organised the rural labour movement.
Raj Narain was an Indian freedom fighter and politician. He won in a famous electoral malpractice case against the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, which led to her disqualification and imposition of Emergency in India in 1975. He defeated Indira Gandhi during the 1977 Lok Sabha elections.

All India Students' Association (AISA) is a far-left student organisation in India. It describes itself as "the voice of the radical students' movement" and is affiliated to the Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation. The association was previously affiliated to the IPF. The association was founded in Allahabad on 9 August 1990 with the merger of several left wing students organisations across India. AISA have organisational presence in the states and union territories of Delhi, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura, etc. Nilasis Bose is the National President of AISA and Prasenjeet Kumar is its National General Secretary.

He has been elected as a Member of Parliament in the 12th Lok Sabha and the 15th Lok Sabha. He is a member of Bharatiya Janata Party, which is ruling party in the Indian Parliament. He is a member of the Standing committee on Coal and Steel, Committee on Public Undertakings and Committee on Petitions. and Consultative Committee of Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways in the 17th Lok Sabha. He joined Bhartiya Janata Party on 7 March 2014 in presence of Rajnath Singh. Earlier he was associated with Janata Dal (United), the ruling party in the state of Bihar.
The vice-chancellor of Banaras Hindu University (VC-BHU) is the chief administrator, and a full-time salaried officer of the Banaras Hindu University. The vice-chancellor derives their powers from sections 7(B) and 7(C) of the Banaras Hindu University Act and from the statutes of the said act.

On 30 May 2019, he was appointed as Cabinet minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Government of India.
Madhav Prasad Tripathi was a leader of Bharatiya Janata Party from Uttar Pradesh. He was an Indian philosopher, sociologist, historian and political scientist. He was one of the most important leaders of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and played key role in establishing the party, the forerunner of the present day Bharatiya Janata Party.

He was formerly the Dean (27th) of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, preceding Arvind Kumar Joshi. Previously, he has been the head of the department of Political Science at Faculty of Social Sciences, Banaras Hindu University from 2014 to 2017. He has been the chair of the Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Chair. He edited the Indian Journal of Political Science from 2016 to 2018.
