Faculty of Law, Banaras Hindu University also known as the Law School, BHU is a faculty in the Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India which offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate courses in legal education. It was founded in 1924. [2]

History

Started in 1924, Faculty of Law was one of the first faculties in the Banaras Hindu University. Initially classes started in the rooms of the Faculty of Arts, (Arts College), by the part-time teachers; mostly learned Advocates from Allahabad High Court.

Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya served as the first dean of the faculty for three years. [2]

The Faculty of Law, Banaras Hindu University was ranked 20 among law schools in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2022. [4] It was ranked 10 by Outlook India 's "Top 13 Government Law Institutes In India" of 2022 [6] and eighth among law colleges by India Today . [5]

With over 30,000 students, and 18,000 residing on campus, BHU is the largest residential university in Asia. The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are a network of engineering and technology institutions in India. Established in 1950, they are renowned for their academic excellence. They are under the ownership of the Ministry of Education of the Government of India and are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. The Act declares them as Institutes of National Importance and lays down their powers, duties, and framework for governance as the country's premier institutions in the field of technology. The act currently lists twenty-three IITs. Each IIT has autonomy and is linked to others through a common council called the IIT Council, which oversees their administration. Prithvi Nath Kaula (1924-2009) was an Indian librarian, Library and Information Sciences specialist and author who worked with the Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, India. Kaula authored sixty books and monographs, six professional journals (founder-editor), over 400 scholarly journal, over 400 peer review, 43 bibliographies and 6000 notes. Kaula was also the recipient of the Padma Shri award in the year 2004.
