The state of Karnataka in India has well known institutions like the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Indian Institute of Technology, Dharwad (IIT,DWD) Indian Institute of Management (IIM), the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Indian Institute of Information Technology, Dharwad (IIIT), International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore, Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) and the National Law School of India University. In addition, a Visvesvaraya Institute of Advanced Technology (VIAT) is being constructed in Muddenahalli. [1]

As per the 2011 census, Karnataka has a literacy rate of 75.36% with 82.47% of males and 68.08% of females being literate. [2]

Primary and Secondary Education

As of March 2006, Karnataka had 54,529 primary schools with 252,875 teachers and 8.495 million students. [3] Likewise, there are 9,499 secondary schools with 92,287 teachers with 1.384 million students. [3]

There are three kinds of schools in Karnataka: government (run by the government), aided (financial aid is provided by the government), and unaided private (no financial aid is provided). In majority of these schools, the medium of instruction is either English or Kannada. The syllabus taught in the schools is that of CBSE, ICSE, NIOS, or the state syllabus (defined by the Department of Public Instruction of the Government of Karnataka). [4] The curriculum includes subjects like science, social studies and mathematics apart from language-related subjects. To maximize attendance, the Karnataka Government has launched a midday meal scheme in government and aided schools in which free lunch is provided to the students. [5]

At the end of secondary education, the students pursuing the Class 10th have to pass an examination called the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC)or Secondary School Certificate (SSC) to move on to the next level. The SSLC is administered by the Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board. [6]

Higher Secondary Education

Students after completing their secondary education (SSLC, SSC) i.e Class 10th will further pursue their higher secondary education i.e Class 11th and Class 12th by either attending a Junior College or by continuing High School in one of three streams Science, Commerce or Arts. Alternatively, students may also enroll in Diploma courses. Upon completing the required coursework, students enroll in general or professional degrees in universities through regular or lateral entry.

Currently, as part of the 2022 Karnataka Hijab Row, women and girls who wear hijab are banned from entering higher secondary institutions, which has brought accusations of repression of girls' education in the state. [7] [8]

International schools and certification boards

Bengaluru is a city that caters to the needs of prospective parents seeking international education for their children.[ citation needed ] Bengaluru has evolved into a global education hub[ citation needed ] due to its cosmopolitan residents. Most of the international schools follow IB (international baccalaureate, Geneva) or Cambridge (Cambridge International Examinations, Britain) curricula. (The ICSE and CBSE are the curricula followed by most of the Indian schools in Karnataka.)

These international schools focus more on holistic education and inquiry-based learning for their students than just focusing on rote learning.

There are 481 degree colleges that are run under the jurisdiction of the universities in the state — Bangalore University, Kuvempu University, Mysore University, Mangalore University, Gulbarga University, and Karnatak University. [9] Deemed universities such as Christ University, Manipal University also exist. Apart from these, there is the Visvesvaraya Technological University which oversees many of the engineering colleges in the state.

The medical colleges in the state are run under the jurisdiction of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences. Some of these baccalaureate colleges are accredited with the status of a deemed university which grants them independence in chalking out their own syllabus and awarding degrees on their own. There are 123 engineering, 35 medical, and 40 dental colleges in the state. [10]

The state has four universities offering courses related to agriculture:University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, University of Agricultural Sciences, Raichur and University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences, Shimoga. The state has set up a Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University at Bidar.

Other universities established by the state government are Kannada University, Karnataka State Open University, and Karnataka State Women's University.

Technical education

The first engineering college (University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering, UVCE) in Karnataka was started by the then Diwan of Mysore Sir M. Visvesvaraya in 1917 in Bengaluru. It was the fifth engineering college to be started in the country. [11] By 1956, Karnataka had two Government and three private engineering colleges in the state.[ citation needed ]

Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), previously spelled Visveswaraiah Technological University, is a collegiate public state university in Belagavi, Karnataka established by the Government of Karnataka. All colleges in the State of Karnataka imparting education in Engineering or Technology, except those that have the consent of VTU and sanction of the Government, are required to be affiliated with Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belagavi. The university is named after Sir M. Visvesvaraya, an Indian civil engineer, statesman and the 19th Diwan of Mysore. VTU is one of the largest technical university which provide opportunities for engineering students and management students.

Bangalore University (BU) is a public state university located in Bangalore, Karnataka, India. The university is a part of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) and affiliated by University Grants Commission (UGC). Bangalore University is accredited by the NAAC with grade A++ in 2023 under the new grading system. Bangalore University was trifurcated into Bengaluru City University and Bengaluru North University.

Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya Institute of Technology is an Indian educational institution located in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The institute is affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University and approved by All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi. Sir MVIT is an ISO 9001:2008 certified institution. It offers programs in the field of technical education.

The Secondary School Leaving Certificate is a certification obtained by a student on successful completion of an examination at the end of study at the secondary schooling level in India. The SSLC is obtained on passing the grade 10 public examination, which is commonly referred to as 'class 10 board examinations' in India. SSLC is a common eligibility examination popular in many states in India, especially Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. The SSLC is also called as Secondary School Certificate (SSC) in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra and also as High School Certificate (HSC) in Madhya Pradesh and also as Matriculation in many states of India.

B.M.S. Institute of Technology (Autonomous) is a private engineering college in Yelahanka, Bangalore, India. It was started in 1946 by Bhusanayana Mukundadas Sreenivasaiah Institute of Technology (BMSIT) and is run by the B.M.S. Educational Trust. It is affiliated with Visvesvaraya Technological University and became autonomous in 2020 .BMSIT is located on Dodballapura Road, Yelahanka, diagonally opposite to the Halli saviruchi. Though a private college, it is partially funded by the Government of Karnataka.

Sambhram Institute of Technology was started in 2001 in Bangalore, Karnataka, India. It is affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University and approved by AICTE. It is also accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA). The campus is situated in M.S.Palya, Jalahalli East, Bangalore-97, India.

Central College Bengaluru (1858) is one of the oldest colleges in India. This college was originally affiliated to University of Mysore in Mysore State. Rev. John Garrett was the first principal of the Central High School, which was afterwards renamed Central College. In 1964, with the reorganization of the Indian state and the formation of Karnataka, Central College was transferred to Bangalore University, a new university formed in 1965 to meet the needs of the people of Bengaluru. Initially, the two colleges of the city, the Central College (CC) and the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) formed the nucleus of Bangalore University.

All India Secondary School Examination ( Secondary School Examination)commonly known as Class 10th board exams, is a centralized public examination that students in schools affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education in India and in few countries such as UAE (where Indian population is more )taken at the end of aaclass 10. The board conducts the examination during the period of February- March earlier it was taken in March to April every year. Now that the board has ended the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation pattern as a result Joint Employment Test, NEET, etc., the exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency instead. In this exam, Mathematics, Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) and Social Science (History, Geography, Political Science, Economics) are compulsory with any two languages (official language of medium and foreign/schedule languages). Students can also opt skill subject such as information technology, painting, yoga, music or artificial intelligence. Successful candidates are awarded the Secondary School Completion Certificate, a Statement of Marks, and a Migration Certificate stating that the candidate has completed Secondary Schooling and can pursue higher education. For the academic year 2016-17, the Central Board of Secondary Education has revived the old system of syllabus and marking scheme (complete syllabus for All India Secondary School Examination and marks out of 500 (in COVID time out of 200) India has state exams and central exams.From 2017-18 And later Academic year use old format

The Government Film & Television Institute, Bangalore is believed to be the first government institute in India to offer technical courses related to films. It is one of the few government film institutes in India. The institute is located at Hesaraghatta, Bengaluru in Karnataka. It is under the Directorate of Technical Education, Government of Karnataka. The institute offers three-year diploma courses in Cinematography and Sound Recording and Engineering. The diploma certificates are awarded by the Department of Technical Education, Government of Karnataka.

Bengaluru City University (BCU), formerly Bengaluru Central University, is a state university located in Bengaluru, Karnataka. It was formed in 2017 and renamed in 2020.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">IIT Dharwad</span> Public engineering institution in Dharwad, India

Indian Institute of Technology Dharwad is an autonomous engineering and technology institute in Dharwad, Karnataka, India. IIT Dharwad started functioning from July 2016 in a temporary campus, previously of the Water and Land Management Institute (WALMI) in Belur Industrial Area, on the outskirts of Dharwad city. It was formally inaugurated on 28 August 2016. For the academic year 2016–2017, the institute offered B.Tech courses in three branches, namely. Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and Mechanical Engineering. The year 2021 saw the introduction of an additional branch, Engineering physics. As of 2022, the institute expanded to provide four additional courses of study, namely Chemical and Biochemical engineering, Mathematics and Computing, Civil and Infrastructure engineering, and Interdisciplinary Sciences.

Venugopal Kuppanna Rajuk known as Venugopal K. R. (VKR) was born in Vannikula/Agnikula Kshatriya Family on 26 March 1956 in Bangalore. His father, Muniswamappa Kuppanna, a farmer worked in Indian Telephone Industries Bangalore, mother Narayanappa Muniyamma was a home maker. He was former Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore University, Principal of University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE), He was also the chairman, Department of Electronics and Communication, Computer Science Engineering and Information Science Engineering in University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE). He has served UVCE as well as Bangalore University for the last five decades. UVCE has been affiliated to Bangalore University since 1964. Dr. Venugopal K R was the Special Officer to the Government of Karnataka for Trifurcating Bangalore University. He submitted the report on 26 March 2015 for restructuring Bangalore University into Bangalore University, Bengaluru City University and Bengaluru North University and UVCE to be carved out as Center of Excellence on the model of Indian Institute of Technology. UVCE was granted autonomy by a bill tabled in Karnataka assembly and now UVCE is an autonomous institution with effect from 25 March 2022.
