Srinagar is the largest city and the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, India. It lies in the Kashmir Valley on the banks of the Jhelum River, a tributary of the Indus, and Dal and Anchar lakes. The city is known for its natural environment, gardens, waterfronts and houseboats. It is also known for traditional Kashmiri handicrafts like Kashmir shawls and also dried fruits. It is the northernmost city of India to have over one million people, the 32nd most populous city in the country, and the second largest city located in the Himalayas, after Kathmandu.
The Jhelum River is a river in northern Indian subcontinent. It originates from Verinag and flows through Indian-administered territory of Jammu and Kashmir, to the Pakistani-administered territory of Azad Kashmir, and then into Pakistani province of Punjab. It is the westernmost of the five rivers of the Punjab region, and passes through the Kashmir Valley. It is a tributary of the Chenab River and has a total length of about 725 kilometres (450 mi).
Dal is a lake in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. It is an urban lake, which is the second largest in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. It is the most visited place in Srinagar by tourists and locals. It is integral to tourism and recreation in Kashmir and is named the "Lake of Flowers", "Jewel in the crown of Kashmir" or "Srinagar's Jewel". The lake is also an important source for commercial operations in fishing and water plant harvesting.
Shalimar Bagh is a Mughal garden in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India, linked through a channel to the northeast of Dal Lake. It also known as Shalimar Gardens, Farah Baksh, and Faiz Baksh. The other famous shoreline garden in the vicinity is Nishat Bagh, 'The Garden of Delight'. The Bagh was built by Mughal Emperor Jahangir, for his wife Nur Jahan, in 1619. The Bagh is considered the high point of Mughal horticulture. It is now a public park and also referred to as the "Crown of Srinagar".
The shikara is a type of wooden boat found on Dal Lake and other water bodies of Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, India. Shikaras are of various sizes and are used for multiple purposes, including transportation. A usual shikara seats six people, with the driver paddling at the rear. Like the Venetian gondolas, they are a cultural symbol of Kashmir. Some shikaras are still used for fishing, harvesting aquatic vegetation, and transport, while most are covered with tarpaulins and are used by tourists. Some are used as floating homes.
Hari Parbat (Kashmiri pronunciation: [haːri parbatʰ]), also called Koh-i-Maran, is a hill overlooking Srinagar, the largest city and the capital of the Jammu and Kashmir state, India. It is the site of a fort, built by the Durrani Empire, and of a Hindu temple, mosques, and gurdwara.
Nishat Bagh is a terraced Mughal garden built on the eastern side of the Dal Lake, close to Srinagar in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is the second largest Mughal garden in the Kashmir Valley. Shalimar Bagh, which is also located on the bank of the Dal Lake. ‘Nishat Bagh’ is Urdu, and means the "Garden of Joy," "Garden of Gladness" and "Garden of Delight."

Char Chinar, also sometimes called Char Chinari, Ropa Lank, or Rupa Lank, is an island in Dal Lake, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. Dal Lake includes 3 islands, 2 of which are marked with beautiful Chinar trees. The island located on the Lakut Dal is known as Roph Lank, is marked with the presence of majestic Chinar trees at the four corners, thus known as Char-Chinari. The second Chinar Island, known as Sone Lank, is located on the Bod Dal and overlooks the holy shrine of Hazratbal.
Dina Nath Walli (1908–2006), also known by his pen name Almast Kashmiri, was a renowned water colour artist and poet from Srinagar city in Kashmir valley. He was the part of the modern art movement in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and was known for painting everyday scenes of Kashmir.
Anchar Lake is a lake located near Soura area in the city of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India. Situated close to Ganderbal, the lake is connected with the famous Dal Lake via a channel "Amir Khan Nallah" which passes through Gilsar and Khushal Sar. The lake is in a highly deteriorated condition. In case of flooding, the excessive water of Dal is diverted here.
Nallah Mar or Mar Canal was a navigational canal running through the old city of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. It connected the Brari Nambal lagoon to the Khushal Sar lake and thus provided navigability between the Dal and Aanchar lakes. It was filled up and converted to a road in the 1970s.
Khushal Sar is a lake located in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is in a highly deteriorated condition and has been encroached upon at many places with illegal construction and landfilling. The lake once stretched from Zoonimar up to the Aali Masjid but now it is considerably reduced. It is connected to the Anchar lake via a small channel. Another smaller lake, known as Gilsar, is connected to the Khushal Sar via a narrow strait, which is spanned by a bridge known as Gil Kadal. The Gilsar lake is in turn connected to the Nigeen lake via the Nallah Amir Khan. Until the 1970s, the Mar Canal drained into this lake providing navigability up to Ganderbal via the Anchar lake. After the filling up of the Mar Canal, the condition of the lake deteriorated further.
Tsoont Kol is a navigational canal running through the Srinagar city of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, that also helps to regulate the water level in the Dal lake. It branches out from the Jhelum just near the northern end of the Zero Bridge and rejoins it in the Maisuma locality of the old city, a few metres downstream of the Budshah Bridge. It has a lock gate known as Dal Gate to regulate the water level in the Dal lake which is located at a slightly higher elevation. The canal also has an island just after the Dal Gate, known as Chinar Bagh.
Nigeen Lake is a mildly eutrophic lake located in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is sometimes considered a part of the Dal lake and is connected to it via a narrow strait. It is also connected to the Khushal Sar and Gil Sar lakes via a channel known as Nallah Amir Khan.
Kashmir International Half Marathon, organized by Big FM, saw more than 30,000 people from India and other countries participate in the event which was held in Srinagar on 13 September 2015.
