Pattan, is a sub-district town and a municipal community in Baramulla district within the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

Location

Pattan is surrounded by Breng Block towards North, Kunzer block towards the south, Narbal block towards east, Singhpora block towards west. This place is near the border of the Baramulla, Budgam and Ganderbal districts.^[3] Budgam district and Beerwah are south of this place. ^{[ citation needed ]}

History

This historical town is considered to have been established by the famous Hindu king Shankarvarman, son of Awantivarman of Utpala dynasty, in the 9th century AD. As per Kalhana's Rajatarangini, Shankarvarman built a town named Pattana. Pandits write it as ‘Pathan’, ‘The Path’, as it falls on the important route to Baramulla. During ancient times Pattan was a business center for wool, livestock and grains. Shankarvarman had built two temples at Pattan town dedicated to Shiva. He named one of the temples after his wife, Sugandha, as Sugandhesa and the other temple was named as Shankargaurishwar. To the north of these two temples was a lake known as “PumpeSar” (Lotus Lake),where now stands a residential area.

Geography

Pattan is located at 34°10′N74°34′E / 34.17°N 74.57°E / 34.17; 74.57 .^[4] It has an average elevation of 1,553 m (5,095 ft). Pattan is one of the historical capitals of Kashmir valley, located nearly in the centre of the valley. Pattan tehsil has remains of four palaces including two in the municipal limits.

Transport

Pattan is accessible through Pattan railway station, Hamre railway station and Mazhom railway station. However, Jammu Tawi is the major railway station about 290 km (180 mi) from Pattan. Via Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, it is only 27 km (17 mi) from Summer Capital Srinagar. Sheikh-ul-Alam International Airport at Srinagar is the nearest airport, 27 km (17 mi) southeast.

Demographics

As of 2011 India census,^[5] Pattan had a population of 19,538 of whom 12,580 are males and 6,958 are female. Literacy rate of Pattan is 74.28% higher than the erstwhile state average of 67.16%. In Pattan, Male literacy is around 83.92% while female literacy rate is 55.91%. Population of children with age of 0-6 is 2,053 which is 10.51% of total population age.^{[ citation needed ]}

However, the distance between Banihal and Qazigund is only 18 km by train on the new railway line which is much shorter than the road. The most common language spoken in the region is Kashmiri; Urdu, Hindi, Gujjari, Pahari and English are other familiar languages.

Ganderbal is a town and a municipality committee in Ganderbal district in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. It is the headquarters of Ganderbal district.It is in Central Kashmir, it has an average elevation of 1,619 metres. Handwara is a sub-district and a town in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is located on Baramulla-Handwara National Highway NH-701 and is governed by a municipal committee.

Magam is a tehsil in central Kashmir's Beerwah sub-district. It is also a town, notified area committee, and a block in Budgam district in the Indian administered union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. It is 11 km (6.8 mi) away from sub-district headquarter Beerwah and 20 km (12 mi) away from Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. Budgam district is an administrative district of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir in the disputed Kashmir region. Created in 1979 with its headquarters at the town of Budgam, it is the district with the largest population of Shia Muslims in the Kashmir valley.

Jammu and Kashmir is home to several valleys such as the Kashmir Valley, Chenab Valley, Sindh Valley and Lidder Valley. It is located 23 km (14 mi) towards east of district headquarters, Baramulla and 32 km (20 mi) from the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar. Sopore, Baramulla, Bandipora and Srinagar are the nearby cities to Lolipora.

Soibugh is a town in Budgam district in the Indian-administered union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. It is 8.5 km (5.3 mi) from the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar. It is one of the highly populated area of district Budgam. Soibugh is one of the 17 blocks of Budgam district.

Dooniwari or Dooniwara is a village in Budgam district of the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, situated 13 km (8.1 mi) away from Srinagar city and 18 km (11 mi) away from Budgam town. The total geographical area of village is 168 ha. Dooniwari has a total population of 1,839 citizens. There are about 278 houses in Dooniwari village as per 2011 census. Areas in its locality include Wathoora, Gopalpora, Chattergam, Kralapora and Bagati Kani Pora.
