Filmfare Awards Bangla is the Bengali segment of the annual Filmfare Awards, presented by The Times Group to honour the artistic and cinematic excellence in Bengali. The first installment of the awards were held collectively for Bengali, Assamese and Odia films as Filmfare Awards East, in a ceremony on 29 March 2014. [1]

The award ceremony was discontinued for two consecutive years in 2015 and 2016 due to unequal representation and importance among the 3 film industries. It was again started from 2017 as Filmfare Awards Bangla and is given only to the Bengali Film Industry. [2]

History

On 8 March 2014, in a press conference held at Kolkata, the Worldwide Media Group announced that Filmfare Award is debuting in Eastern India named as "Filmfare Awards East" to honour the best cinematic artistic talents of the region. In the inaugural installment, it was declared that awards in 29 categories would be given away at the Science City auditorium, Kolkata on 29 March 2014. The awards would include 21 trophies for Bengali movies and four each for Odia and Assamese films. The four categories for both Odia and Assamese films were Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress. The winners were selected from 102 entries in Bengali films, 36 and 14 entries respectively from the Odia and Assamese films. [3] [4] [5] The Award ceremony was not hosted in 2015 and 2016. From 2017 the award is given only to Bengali film industry and 2020 onwards, the award was rebranded as "Filmfare Awards Bangla". [6]

The awards were introduced by the Filmfare magazine of The Times Group in 1954, the same year as the National Film Awards. Anirban Bhattacharya is an Indian actor, theatre actor, singer and director. His first successful theatre production was Debi Sarpamasta, written by Manoj Mitra, directed by Debesh Chattopadhyay. His other notable works are Anthony Soudamini, Nagamandala, Jara Agun Lagay, Bisorjan, FM Mahanagar, Karu Basana, Awdyo Shesh Rajani, Athoi etc. In 2017, he got the Mahindra Excellence Theatre Awards (META) as Best Actor in a Leading Role (Male) for Awdyo Shesh Rajani. In 2015, he started his film career with the Zee Bangla telefilm Kader Kuler Bou. He got fame for his character as Bishan Roy from the film Eagoler Chokh. For playing this role, he was picked up as the Filmfare Awards East for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in 2017. In 2019, He got his first Best Actor Award for the role of Nikhilesh Chowdhury from the movie Ghawre Bairey Aaj which was immensely praised by critics and audiences. He made his directorial debut through the Bengali crime drama web series Mandaar, which is inspired by William Shakespeare's Macbeth. His second direction Ballavpurer Roopkotha was released on 21 October 2022.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Filmfare Awards Marathi</span> Indian Marathi films awards

The Filmfare Marathi Awards are presented annually to both artistic and technical excellence of professionals in the Marathi film industry of India. The ceremony had been sponsored by various private organisations in the past as well as in present provisions. During several years in 1990s, a live ceremony was broadcast to television audiences but was later discontinued due to unknown reasons. In 1963 the awards were extended to Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Bengali languages. The presentation of the awards has been inconsistent throughout its inception. Presently, a recorded and edited version of the awards ceremony is televised.

Filmfare Awards Punjabi are presented to the best films and performers in Punjabi cinema. The Awards were first presented in 2017.

The 4th Filmfare Awards Bangla ceremony, presented by The Times Group, honoured only the best Bengali language Indian films of 2019. 2019 onwards, Filmfare Awards East was discontinued and separate award shows were held for Bengali and Assamese Films as Filmfare Awards Bangla and Filmfare Awards Bangla, respectively. The ceremony was held on 31 March 2021 in Kolkata.

The 7th Filmfare Awards Bangla is a ceremony, presented by The Times Group, which honored the best Indian Bengali-language films of 2023.
