Handball in India is controlled by the Handball Association India. It was founded by Jagat Singh Lohan from Rohtak, Haryana, who was an alumnus of YMCA College of Physical Education of Madras. His efforts during Munich Olympics helped in establishing HFI. The member states were Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Vidharbha and Jammu and Kashmir. He was also elected as first secretary general of Handball Federation of India.

The first senior men's national handball championship was held at Sir Chhotu Ram Stadium, Rohtak, in 1972.

Performance at Asian championships

Due to huge efforts of the HFI administrators, India started participating in the Asian Men's Handball Championship in 1979 and the Asian Women's Handball Championship in 1993. Though the teams were yet to win a medal, participation brought important experience for players and coaching staff. [1]

Performance at Asian Games

Indian men's handball team first participated in the Asian Games in 1982 when the event was hosted in New Delhi. Women's team debuted in the event 2006 held at Doha.[ citation needed ]

Performance at South Asian Games

Indian men's handball team is the second best team of Asian Games, after Pakistan. Men's team debuted in 2010 and won silver medal, losing to Pakistan in the final by 37–31. [2] In the 2016 edition, India got their revenge when they hosted the event in Guwahati, narrowly defeating Pakistan by 32–31. [3] In the 2019 edition, Pakistan dethroned India beating them in Kathmandu by 30–29. [4]

Indian women's handball team is the best team of South Asia, winning both editions of the South Asian Games in 2016 and 2019, defeating Bangladesh and hosts Nepal respectively. [5]

Handball leaders

Since the foundation of handball and Handball Federation of India (HFI), many government officials and other renowned personalities were involved in it. They not only represented handball in the Indian Olympic Association, but also at international level. One of these is HFI president Dr. Roshan Lal Anand, the longest serving director of National Institute of Sports. [6] [7] Anand was elected as Secretary General of Asian Handball Federation (2000 - 2013) unopposed for continuously 13 years. [8] He was also elected as IOA Secretary General. [9]

Dr. Surinder Mohan Bali, who is the longest serving HFI secretary general, was elected as member of AHF Marketing Commission. [10] Bali become the first Indian who was awarded with IHF Badge of Merit in Gold for his contributions to the development of handball, by the International Handball Federation during the 2009 IHF Congress held in Cairo (Egypt). [11] Bali is also a member of Executive council of the Indian Olympic Association.[ citation needed ]

Dr. Anandeshwar Panday, who is current HFI secretary general, was elected as member of AHF Commission of Organizing and Competition and treasurer of Indian Olympic Association in 2017. NFI was established in 1978 to standardise rules and regulations and to promote and develop the growth of netball in India. The Korea Handball Federation (KHF) is the governing body of handball and beach handball in South Korea. KHF is affiliated to the Asian Handball Federation (AHF), Korean Sport & Olympic Committee and International Handball Federation (IHF) since 1960.

‌The 2017 Asian Club League Handball Championship was the 20th edition of the championship held under the aegis of Asian Handball Federation. The championship was hosted by Handball Federation of India at the Kotla Vijay Bhaskar Reddy Indoor Stadium, Hyderabad (India) from 20 to 30 November 2017. It was the official competition for men's handball clubs of Asia crowning the Asian champions. Al-Najma Club (Bahrain) wins the championship by beating Al-Duhail Club (Qatar) by 21 – 16 in a low scoring match. The winner qualifies for the 2018 IHF Super Globe.

The West Asian Women's Handball Championship or AHF Women's President Cup since 2023, is the official competition organised by the Asian Handball Federation for senior women's national handball teams of Western Asia.

The Iraqi Handball Federation (IHF) is the administrative and controlling body for handball in Republic of Iraq. Founded in 1972, IHF is a member of the Asian Handball Federation and member of the International Handball Federation since 1976.

Muhammad Shafiq is a Pakistani sports administrator and former track and field sprinter. He is 3rd and current Secretary General of Asian Handball Federation (AHF) since 25 October 2013. He is also holds the position of President in Pakistan Handball Federation since 2012.

‌The 2021 Asian Club League Handball Championship was 23rd edition of the championship held from 12 to 21 June 2021 at Jeddah, Saudi Arabia under the aegis of Asian Handball Federation (AHF). It was the third time in history that the championship was organised by the Saudi Arabian Handball Federation. It also acted as the qualification tournament for the 2021 IHF Men's Super Globe, with top team from the championship directly qualifying for the event to be held also in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Al-Duhail SC won the final 27–24 against Al-Kuwait SC for their second Asian Club League title.

The Handball Association of the DPR Korea (HADPRK) is the administrative and controlling body for handball and beach handball in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Founded in 1974, HADPRK is a member of Asian Handball Federation (AHF) and the International Handball Federation (IHF).

The 2022 Asian Women's Junior Handball Championship was 16th edition of the championship held from 7 to 14 March 2022 in Almaty, Kazakhstan under the aegis of Asian Handball Federation. It was the fifth time in history that the championship was organised by the Kazakhstan Handball Federation. It also acted as the qualification tournament for the 2022 Women's Junior World Handball Championship, with top tree teams from the championship directly qualifying for the event to be held in Slovenia.

The women's qualification for the Olympic handball tournament will occur between November 2022 and April 2024, assigning quota places to the twelve squads for the Games: the hosts, the world champion, four continental champions, and six teams from the IHF World Olympic qualifying tournaments, respectively.
