Ntuthuko Mbongiseni Sibiya,known as Jomo Sibiya,is a South African politician who served as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Human Settlements and Public Works in KwaZulu-Natal from March 2021 until August 2022. A member of the African National Congress,Sibiya was elected to the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature in 2014.
Sibiya was born in Silutshana,Nquthu in South Africa's former Natal Province. He matriculated from Ekucabangeni High School. Sibiya went on to study at the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Westville campus and graduated from the university with a degree in political science in 2008. [1]
While a student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal,Sibiya became involved in politics. He was the chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC) Youth League's branch at the Westville campus. After he left university,Sibiya was elected secretary of the ANC's Ward 24 branch in eThekwini. He later became chairperson of the branch. Sibiya served as chairperson of the ANC Youth League in eThekwini between 2011 and 2013. He was elected to the Regional Executive Committee of the ANC in eThekwini in 2012 and later became a member of the party's Regional Working Committee. In 2014,Sibiya moved back to Nquthu and was elected to serve on the regional executive committee of the ANC's iNkosi Bhambatha Region. He had also worked for the provincial department of cooperative governance and traditional affairs. [1]
In 2014,Sibiya was elected to the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature via the ANC's provincial electoral list. He served on multiple committees,including the Human Settlements Portfolio Committee. He was elected to the ANC's provincial executive committee in 2018. Following the 2019 general elections,Sibiya was elected chairperson of the Education Portfolio Committee. [1]
In March 2021,premier Sihle Zikalala conducted a reshuffle of his provincial Executive Council following the death of MEC Bheki Ntuli in January 2021. Sibiya was appointed as the MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works,taking over from Peggy Nkonyeni,who was moved to the Transport,Community Safety and Liaison portfolio. [2]
In July 2022,the ANC's Inkosi Bhambatha region nominated Sibiya to contest the position of provincial treasurer at the ANC's provincial elective conference. [3] At the provincial conference on 23 July 2022,Sibiya was nominated from the floor and accepted the nomination for provincial treasurer. He competed against former Newcastle mayor Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba,who was also nominated from the floor. [4] Sibiya lost to Mahlaba. [5]
On 5 August 2022,Zikalala resigned as premier. Finance MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube was elected as the new premier on 10 August. He resigned as MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works in anticipation of Dube-Ncube's cabinet announcement on 11 August 2022. [6]
Sibiya is married to Simphiwe Msimango. They have children together. [1]
Bongiwe Nomusa Sithole-Moloi has served as KwaZulu-Natal's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Agriculture and Rural Development since May 2019. She has represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature since 2014 and was formerly the MEC for Arts,Culture,Sports and Recreation from 2016 to 2019. She gained political prominence as the Mayor of Umgungundlovu District Municipality from 2000 to 2008;she was removed from that position in a vote of no-confidence supported by her own party.
Sihle Zikalala is a South African politician from KwaZulu-Natal who has served as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs since 2022. He has also been a Member of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature since 2015.
Ravigasen Ranganathan "Ravi" Pillay is a South African attorney and African National Congress (ANC) politician who servedthe Member of the Executive Council for Economic Development,Tourism and Environmental Affairs in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government from November 2020 until August 2022. He was the MEC for Finance from May 2019 to November 2020 and the MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works from 2011 to 2019. Pillay was elected to the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature in 2009 and served as the legislature's chief whip of the majority party from 2009 to 2011.
Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu is a South African lawyer and African National Congress (ANC) politician who has been serving as the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Health since May 2019. She became a Member of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature in May 2014. She was the chair of the legislature's Agriculture Portfolio Committee from 2014 to 2019. She was elected to the legislature in May 2019. Mavimbela is a member of the African National Congress.
Nonhlanhla Mildred Khoza is a South African politician in KwaZulu-Natal serving as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for the provincial Department of Social Development. She was appointed to the position in May 2019. Khoza became a member of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature in May 2014. Muntukayise Bhekuyise Ntuli was a South African politician. A member of the African National Congress,he served as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa from 1999 to 2003,when he resigned amid fraud allegations. He was then elected to the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature in 2009. On 11 September 2019,Ntuli became the Member of the Executive Council for Transport,Community Safety &Liaison,replacing Mxolisi Kaunda,who was elected Mayor of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality. Ntuli died on 16 January 2021,from complications of COVID-19.
Kwazikwenkosi Innocent Mshengu is a South African lawyer and African National Congress politician who served as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Education in KwaZulu-Natal until 11 August 2022 when he was replaced with Mbali Frazer by the new KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube,and has also been a member of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature since May 2019. Mshengu is the provincial chairperson of the African National Congress Youth League.
