Le Soleil ("The Sun") was founded in 1973 by Rolande Bisserth, originally on 10th Avenue between 57 - 58th Streets in an area called Bois Verna, named after a neighborhood in Port-au-Prince known for its ancient latticed houses, where New York's version once boasted bookstores, churches, cafés, and bodegas called petit magasins. Its decor entails colorful primitive-style tropical landscapes decorated on peach-colored walls above brown wainscoting. [12]
It is two-star rated by Eater. [12] It was rated among the "Best Haitian restaurants in NYC" by Time Out magazine. [1] In 2017 Foursquare ranked the restaurant 12th for "Best Caribbean Restaurants in New York City". [13] It was rated by Thrillist, as the best BYOB for the "10 Most Essential Restaurants in Lincoln Center". [14]
Veselka is a Ukrainian restaurant at 144 Second Avenue in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. It was established in 1954 by Wolodymyr Darmochwal and his wife, Olha Darmochwal, post–World War II Ukrainian refugees. Veselka is one of the last of many Slavic restaurants that once proliferated the neighborhood. A cookbook, published in October 2009 by St. Martin’s Press, highlights more than 120 of the restaurant’s Eastern European recipes.
Joshua Ozersky was an American food writer and historian. He first came to prominence as a founding editor of New York magazine's food blog, Grub Street, for which he received a James Beard Foundation Award in 2008. He was the author of several books, including The Hamburger: A History, Colonel Sanders and the American Dream and Archie Bunker's America: TV in an Era of Change, 1968–1978. He was Editor-at-Large for Esquire, writing about food and restaurants. He also wrote frequently for The Wall Street Journal, Food & Wine, and The New York Observer, among other places. Although read primarily as a food writer, he has said in numerous public appearances that he disliked "food writing" as such, and that his strongest influences were G. K. Chesterton, Thomas Babington Macaulay and A. J. Liebling.
L&B Spumoni Gardens is an Italian-American pizzeria-restaurant in the Gravesend neighborhood of Brooklyn in New York City. Originally conceived as an ice and spumoni stand prior to World War II, it grew during the mid-1950s into a full-scale pizzeria that's known today primarily for its Sicilian pizza and ices.
