Wheeling station is a U.S. historic train station located at Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia. It was built in 1907–1908, and is a four-story, rectangular brick and limestone building in the Beaux-Arts-style. It measures 250 feet long by 89 feet, 6 inches, deep. It features mansard roofs, built of concrete and covered with Spanish tile painted pink. Passenger service ceased in 1961. The building was remodeled in 1976 to house the West Virginia Northern Community College.
The Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park is a Virginia museum, run as a state park, dedicated to preserving the history of the southwestern part of the commonwealth. It is located in Big Stone Gap, in a house built in the 1880s for former Virginia Attorney General, Rufus A. Ayers. It was designed and built by Charles A. Johnson. Construction began in 1888 and was completed in 1895.
The Woodson Law Office is a structure within the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park. It was originally built by Samuel McDearmon in 1854 and rented by Woodson for his law office until he purchased it a couple of years later. It is a small structure and was built next to the main general store of Appomattox.
Loewenstein and Sons Hardware Building, also known as the Loewenstein Building or Rite Aid Building, is a historic commercial structure located at Charleston, West Virginia. It was designed by the Columbus, Ohio architectural firm of Yost & Packard.
The Southern Methodist Church Building, now known and used as the Upshur County Historical Society's History Center Museum, is an historic former church building located at 81 W. Main Street in Buckhannon, Upshur County, West Virginia. It was built in 1856 with final modifications in the 1890s, and is a simple rectangular frame building. The original structure measures 45 feet by 33 feet in the Greek Revival style. In 1891, a 9 feet by 14 feet vestibule was added, along with a three-story bell tower. In 1968, it was sold to the Church of Christ and then sold to the Upshur County Historical Society in 1986.
Adam Stephen House is a historic home located at Martinsburg, Berkeley County, West Virginia. It was built between 1772 and 1789, and is a 2+1⁄2-story, stone house measuring 43 feet, 5 inches, by 36 feet, 3 inches. It was the home of Adam Stephen. Built of shaped limestone, it stands on a prominent stone ledge, with two outbuildings in stone and log. After falling into near-ruin, iIt was restored in the 1960s by the General Adam Stephen Memorial Association and is open as a historic house museum. The house was built over a natural cave, with stone steps leading down from the basement. A local caver's organization has worked since 2002 to excavate the cave, which had become plugged with earth, and the excavation is available for tours on open house days.
Pennsboro station is a historic railway depot located at Pennsboro, Ritchie County, West Virginia. It is a one-story brick building built on two sections. It was constructed by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, with the first section built in 1883, and the second added around 1900. It consists of three rooms and is approximately 1,315 square feet (122.2 m2) in size. It was restored by the Ritchie County Historical Museum and open as a railroad museum and community center.
Liggett and Myers Tobacco Company is a historic factory building located at Huntington, Cabell County, West Virginia, USA. The original building was constructed in 1917 and is a four-story, red brick, Commercial Style warehouse building, measuring 140 by 80 feet. At the rear of the building is an addition built in 1920. It is a two-story, red brick, Commercial Style warehouse building, measuring 210 by 80 feet. Also on the property is the redrying plant, built in 1910. It is a long, one story brick industrial building with a gable roof. The complex was built by the Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company as a tobacco warehouse and cigarette factory.
Prince Brothers General Store, also known as the Berry Store or simply Prince Store, is a historic general store located at Prince, Fayette County, West Virginia. It was built about 1900, and is a two-story frame commercial building. It is the last surviving building of the New River coal field commercial businesses dated to the turn of the 20th century. It is owned by the National Park Service as part of the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve.
Lost River General Store, also known as Lost River Store House, is an historic general store located on the grounds of The Inn at Lost River at Lost River, Hardy County, West Virginia. It was built in 1898, and is a two-story, front gable, wood-frame building with a one-story front porch. The front section measures approximately 20 feet by 40 feet. The store building was renovated in the 1990s. From the early 1900s (decade) until 1979, the building also housed the Lost River Post Office. Also on the property is an outhouse that may have been built in the 1930s by a Works Progress Administration (WPA) crew.
Lost Creek station is a historic railroad depot located at Lost Creek, Harrison County, West Virginia. It was built in 1892 by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, and is a one-story, Folk Victorian frame building with board-and-batten siding. It measures 44 by 18.5 feet. In 1923, it was the largest cattle shipping point east of the Mississippi River.
Weston Colored School, also known as the Central West Virginia Genealogical & Historical Library and Museum and Frontier School, is a historic one-room school building located at Weston, Lewis County, West Virginia. It was built in 1882, and is a single-story rubbed red brick building on a fieldstone foundation. It originally measured 22 feet by 28 feet, then enlarged in 1928 by 12 feet, 6 inches. It was used as an educational facility for the community's African-American youth until desegregation in 1954. It was subsequently used for storage, then an agricultural classroom for the Lewis County High School, and as a shop for mentally disabled students. It afterwards was used by the Central West Virginia Genealogical & Historical Library and Museum.
Jacobs-Hutchinson Block, also known as Peoples' National Bank and Friendly Furniture Store, is a historic commercial building located at Fairmont, Marion County, West Virginia. It was built in 1902, and is a five-story commercial structure with a basement and a flat roof in the Renaissance Revival style. It is a steel column and beam structure, sheathed with pressed brick, blue stone, and terra cotta. It rests on a stone foundation. It measures 92 feet by 80 feet deep and 84 feet high. The building has housed department stores, a bank, a furniture store, and law offices.
Beagle Hotel was a historic inn and tavern located near Valley Grove, Ohio County, West Virginia. It was built before 1827 and operated as the Beagle Hotel until 1893. Attached to the hotel was a general store. Both buildings were 2 1/2 stories high and covered in clapboard.
Cass Historic District is a national historic district located at Cass, Pocahontas County, West Virginia. The district encompasses 79 contributing buildings and 1 contributing structure. Cass was founded in 1902 as a company town for lumbering by the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company. The district features three classes of housing: class three houses for day laborers, class two houses for section foreman and office personnel, and class one houses for persons in management positions. The class three houses measure 30 feet by 20 feet, and are very stout, rectangular two-story frame structures, with front and rear porches. Non-residential buildings include the former hospital, clubhouse, town building, lodge hall, former Methodist and Presbyterian churches, old school building, and the company store.
Blackman–Bosworth Store, also known as Bosworth Store Building, S.N. Bosworth's Cheap Cash Store, David Blackman's Store, and Randolph County Museum, is a historic general store located at Beverly, Randolph County, West Virginia, United States. It consists of the original section, built about 1828, with an addition built in 1894. The original section is a two-story brick building on a cut-stone foundation. In addition to being operated as a general store into the 1920s, the building had short-term use as county courthouse, post office and semi-official meeting place. In 1973, the Randolph County Historical Society purchased the property, and it now serves as the Randolph County Museum and as a meeting place.
Big Otter Mill, also known as Forbes Mill, is a historic grist mill located near Bedford, Bedford County, Virginia, USA. It was built about 1920 and is a large, 2½-story, mortise-and-tenon framed mill building, topped by an unusual and picturesque mansard roof. The mill retains a nearly complete set of early-20th century machinery, including a 13-feet diameter water wheel, which was used until the late 1940s. Also on the property are a contributing mill race and the foundation of a store. The building is under restoration as a mill museum.
Q. M. Pyne Store, also known as the Palisades Restaurant, is a historic country store located at Eggleston, Giles County, Virginia. It consists of two multi-story, brick masonry structures, attached side by side and embanked into a hillside. The north building was completed in 1926 and appended with a similar building on the south side about 1929. The north building is three stories and measures 70 feet deep and 40 feet wide. It has a flat roof, parapet and sign tablet, with a windowed storefront below. The building housed C.C. Whittaker & Company, a general store; a Chevrolet Dealership, with a showroom and a place to repair cars; a doctor's office; and the United States Post Office until it moved to its new location in the 1980s.
Sibley's and James Store Historic District is a national historic district located at Mathews, Mathews County, Virginia. It encompasses two contributing buildings, known variously as the Sibley Brothers General Store (1899), the separately listed Old Thomas James Store, and The Old Store. One of the buildings consists of two sections that were originally two separate buildings, but is now connected to Sibley's by a hyphen. The Sibley's General Store was constructed in 1899, and is a 2+1⁄2-story folk Victorian wood-frame building with a full front porch, weatherboard exterior cladding, and wood-shingle decoration at the eaves. It is connected by a hyphen to a one-story, wood-frame building built about 1840.
A. P. Carter Store is a historic general store museum located at Maces Spring, Scott County, Virginia. It was built in 1945, and is a one-story frame building with a cross-gable roof. The store is most notable for its association with the Carter Family, a traditional American folk music group that recorded between 1927 and 1956. It was the residence and small store operated by former country artist A.P. Carter (1891–1960) after he left the music business.
