Riau is a province of Indonesia. It is located on the central eastern coast of Sumatra along the Strait of Malacca. The province shares land borders with North Sumatra to the northwest, West Sumatra to the west, and Jambi to the south, and a maritime border with the Riau Islands and the country of Malaysia to the east. It is the second-largest province in the island of Sumatra after South Sumatra, and is slightly larger than Jordan. According to the 2020 census, Riau had a population of 6,394,087 across a land area of 89,935.90 square kilometres; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 6,614,384. The province comprises ten regencies and two cities, with Pekanbaru serving as the capital and largest city.
Pekanbaru is the capital city of the Indonesian province of Riau, and a major economic centre on the eastern side of Sumatra Island with its name derived from the Malay words for 'new market' . It has an area of 632.26 km2 (244.12 sq mi), with a population of 897,767 at the 2010 Census, and 983,356 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 1,007,540. It is located on the banks of the Siak River, which flows into the Strait of Malacca, Pekanbaru has direct access to the busy strait and has long been known as a trading port.
Bengkalis Regency is a regency of Indonesia in Riau Province. The regency was originally established in 1956 and then included most of the northern part of the province, but on 4 October 1999 it was divided up, with most of the territory being split off to form the new Rokan Hilir Regency, Siak Regency and the city of Dumai. On 19 December 2008 a further five districts were removed to create the new Meranti Islands Regency, leaving eight districts in the Bengkalis Regency. These eight districts has increased since 2010 to eleven by the splitting of existing districts on the Sumatran mainland.
Deli Serdang is a regency in the Indonesian province of North Sumatra. It surrounds the city of Medan, and also borders the city of Binjai, which is effectively a bedroom community for Medan. It occupies an area of 2,497.72 sq.km. The capital of the district is Lubuk Pakam, which is located approximately 30 km east of Medan. The national census of 2000 recorded 1,573,987 people, but by 2010 the regency's population increased by 13.76% to 1,790,431, and at the 2020 Census the total was 1,931,441. The official estimate as at mid 2022 was 1,953,986. Kualanamu International Airport is located in this regency.
Bulungan Regency is a regency of North Kalimantan Province in Indonesia. It covers an area of 13,181.92 km2 and had a population of 112,663 at the 2010 Census and 151,844 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 157,593. The administrative centre is at Tanjung Selor.
Bangkalan Regency is a regency of East Java province in Indonesia. The seat of its government is the town of Bangkalan. The regency is located on the west side of Madura Island, bordering with Sampang Regency to the east, Java Sea to the north and Madura Strait to the west and the south sides. It covers an area of 1,260.14 km2, and had a population of 906,761 at the 2010 census and reached 1,060,377 at the 2020 census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 1,086,620 – comprising 535,522 males and 551,098 females.
Pamekasan Regency is a regency (kabupaten) of the province of East Java, Indonesia. It is located on Madura Island approximately 120 kilometres (75 mi) east of Surabaya, the provincial capital. The regency covers an area of 792.30 square kilometres (305.91 sq mi), and at the 2010 census it had a population of 795,918 ; at the 2020 census the total was 850,057 and the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 857,818 – comprising 420,612 males and 437,206 females. The administrative capital is the town of Pamekasan.
Situbondo Regency is a regency (kabupaten) of East Java province, Indonesia. It covers an area of 1,638.50 km2, and had a population of 647,619 at the 2010 Census and 685,967 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 673,102. It is located towards the eastern end of Java, before Banyuwangi. The administrative centre is Situbondo, a small town within the regency. One of the famous tourist sites is Baluran National Park.
Pelalawan is a regency (kabupaten) of Riau Province, Indonesia. It is located on the island of Sumatra. The regency was created on 4 October 1999 as a result of the division of Kampar Regency, of which it was previously the eastern 43%. It now has an area of 13,408.72 km² and had a population of 301,829 at the 2010 Census and 390,046 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 410,988. The administrative centre is in the town of Pangkalan Kerinci.
Rokan Hilir is a regency (kabupaten) of Riau Province, on Sumatra island, Indonesia. It was formed on 4 October 1999 from districts which had previously been the northwestern part of Bengkalis Regency. It occupies the lower part of the catchment area of the Rokan River, and has an area of 8,851.59 km2. It had a population of 553,216 at the 2010 census and 637,161 at the 2020 census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 638,407. The administrative centre of the Rokan Hilir Regency is located at the town of Bagansiapiapi.
Buol Regency is a regency of Central Sulawesi Province of Indonesia. It was created on 4 October 1999, having previously been the eastern half of a larger Buol Tolitoli Regency. It covers an area of 4,043.57 km2, and had a population of 132,330 at the 2010 Census; and 145,254 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 148,246. The administrative centre is the town of Buol, in Biau District.
Asahan Regency is a regency in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Following the creation of the new Batubara Regency, the regency now covers an area of 3,702.7 square kilometres; it had a population of 668,272 according to the 2010 census and 769,960 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 787,681. Its administrative centre is now at the town of Kisaran. The Regency surrounds but now does not include the city of Tanjungbalai which was its capital until created an independent city in 1984. The Asahan Sultanate was located in the region.
Selat Panjang is the capital of Kepulauan Meranti Regency, which is part of the province of Riau in Indonesia. The regency is a new regency in Riau province which was established on 19 December 2008 after being separated from Bengkalis Regency. The city is located on Tebing Tinggi Island, which is separated by a narrow channel from Sumatra, and across the Strait of Malacca from Singapore.
South Labuhanbatu Regency is a regency of North Sumatra, Indonesia, created on 24 June 2008 by being carved out of the southern districts of the existing Labuhanbatu Regency The new South Labuhanbatu Regency covers an area of 3,596 square kilometres and according to the 2010 census it had a population of 277,673, which rose to 314,094 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 320,324. Its administrative headquarters are at Kotapinang.
East Sumba Regency is geographically the largest of the four regencies which divide the island of Sumba, within East Nusa Tenggara Province of Indonesia. It occupies 64% of the entire island, being much less densely populated than the western third. The town of Waingapu is the capital of East Sumba Regency. The population of East Sumba Regency was 227,732 at the 2010 Census and 244,820 at the 2020 Census, comprising 125,967 male and 118,853 female; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 248,776.
Mimika Regency is one of the regencies (kabupaten) in the Indonesian province of Central Papua. It covers an area of 21,693.51 km2, and had a population of 182,001 at the 2010 Census, but grew to 311,969 at the 2020 Census. The official estimate as at mid 2022 was 321,657. The administrative centre is the town of Timika, which lies within Mimika Baru District, which had 144,893 inhabitants in mid 2021.
Pasangkayu Regency is one of the six regencies which comprise West Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, on the island of Sulawesi. It covers an area of 3,043.75 km2 and had a population of 134,303 at the 2010 Census and 188,861 at the 2020 Census. The official estimate as at mid 2022 was 198,608. The town of Pasangkayu is the capital and chief town of the regency.
Meranti Islands is an archipelago forming a regency (kabupaten) of Riau Province, and lies off the eastern coast of the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. It was created on 19 December 2008 by the separating of this archipelago from the mainland regency of Bengkalis. The regency comprises the islands of Tebing Tinggi, Rangsang, Padang and Merbau, together with minor offshore islands, but does not include Bengkalis Island which is geographically part of the archipelago but remains within Bengkalis Regency. The principal town is Selat Panjang on Tebing Tinggi Island. The regency covers an area of 3,623.93 km2, and had a population of 176,290 at the 2010 Census and 206,116 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 213,532.
Bantaeng Regency is a regency of South Sulawesi Province in Indonesia. It covers an area of 395.83 km2 and had a population of 176,984 at the 2010 Census, rising to 196,716 at the 2020 Census. The official estimate as at mid 2022 was 199,399. The administrative centre is the town of Bantaeng, which lies on the south coast of the southern peninsula of Sulawesi island.
Pasuruan Regency is a regency in East Java, province of Indonesia. The capital of this regency is Bangil. The regency covers an area of 1,474.02 km2, and it had a population of 1,512,468 at the 2010 Census and 1,605,969 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 1,619,035. These figures excludes the population of the city of Pasuruan, which lies geographically within this regency but is administratively separate from it. At present, there are moves under way to make Bangil the new administrative centre of Pasuruan Regency, with some offices being transferred from Pasuruan city to Bangil.
