Hamilton is an unincorporated community in Olive Township, St. Joseph County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. [1]
Hamilton was originally called Terre Coupee, and under the latter name was platted in 1837. [2] The name of Hamilton comes from Hamilton's Tavern the community once contained. [2] A post office opened under the name Terre Coupee in 1831, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1893. [3]

The county was officially organized on December 19, 1821. It was named after the St. Francis River. The origin of the river's name is unclear. It may refer to St. Francis of Assisi. Another possibility is that Jacques Marquette, a Jesuit who explored the region in 1673, named the river for the Jesuit missionary Francis Xavier; Marquette had spent some time at the mission of St. François Xavier before his voyage and, as a Jesuit, was unlikely to have given the river a name honoring the Franciscans.

The community is part of the Terre Haute Metropolitan Statistical Area. A large portion of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods along U.S. Route 150 is taken up by the grounds of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, which contain the motherhouse of the Sisters of Providence as well as Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. Although Saint Mary-of-the-Woods is unincorporated, it has a post office, with the ZIP code of 47876. It had a population of 797 at the 2010 census.

The town of New Carlisle, abutting the LaPorte County line in Olive Township in northwestern St. Joseph County, perches on a hill overlooking the rich Terre Coupee prairie to the east. Its main street, Michigan Street, at forty-five feet is wider than the town's other streets and has been from its platting in 1835 a part of an improved thoroughfare, first the Michigan Road, later the Lincoln Highway and, finally, US 20. Two parallel railroads, Conrail and the electrically powered South Shore, run along the town's north edge at the bottom of the hill, beyond which still lies open farmland. This is largely true to the west and south as well, although in recent years commercial development has occurred at the western edge of town along US 20 at the county line, and some residential development to the south. Along US 20 to the east is a long line of ca. 1950 housing development, which until recently edged farmland between the highway and the railroads. Now much of this farmland is zoned industrial, owing largely to the construction less than 2 miles (3.2 km) away of the enormous I/N Tek steel mill, completed in 1990, and its subsidiary I/N Kote, in 1991. The district is the main commercial district on Michigan Street.
Haven Hubbard Home, also known as Hamilton Grove, is a historic sanitarium and national historic district located in Olive Township, St. Joseph County, Indiana. The district encompasses six contributing buildings and one contributing site on a former sanitarium originally developed as a working farm. It was developed between about 1860 and 1961, and includes examples of Second Empire, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, and Collegiate Gothic architecture. Notable buildings include the Hubbard Homestead Home, Homestead Shed, Homestead Barn, Pump House, Epp Hall, and Haven Hubbard Home Parsonage (1960).
John Reynolds was a politician from Indiana. He served in the Indiana House of Representatives from 1850 to 1851 and in 1867. He served in the Indiana Senate in 1862.
