The saros is a period of exactly 223 synodic months, that can be used to predict eclipses of the Sun and Moon. One saros period after an eclipse, the Sun, Earth, and Moon return to approximately the same relative geometry, a near straight line, and a nearly identical eclipse will occur, in what is referred to as an eclipse cycle. A sar is one half of a saros.

March 1988 lunar eclipse

A penumbral lunar eclipse took place on March 3, 1988, the first of two lunar eclipses in 1988. Earlier sources compute this as a 0.3% partial eclipse lasting under 14 minutes, and newest calculations list it as a penumbral eclipse that never enters the umbral shadow.

September 1978 lunar eclipse

A total lunar eclipse took place on September 16, 1978, the second of two total lunar eclipses in 1978.

October 2032 lunar eclipse

A total lunar eclipse will take place on October 18, 2032.

April 1968 lunar eclipse

A total lunar eclipse took place on April 13, 1968, the first of two total eclipses in 1968, the second being on October 6, 1968. The tables below contain detailed predictions and additional information on the Total Lunar Eclipse of April 13, 1968.

April 1950 lunar eclipse

A total lunar eclipse took place on April 2, 1950. This was the first total lunar eclipse of Saros cycle 131.

February 1970 lunar eclipse

A partial lunar eclipse took place on February 21, 1970. A tiny bite out of the Moon may have been visible at maximum, though just 5% of the Moon was shadowed in a partial eclipse which lasted for 52 minutes and 42 seconds. A shading across the moon from the Earth's penumbral shadow should have been visible at maximum eclipse.

A total lunar eclipse will take place on September 19, 2043.
