The saros is a period of exactly 223 synodic months, that can be used to predict eclipses of the Sun and Moon. One saros period after an eclipse, the Sun, Earth, and Moon return to approximately the same relative geometry, a near straight line, and a nearly identical eclipse will occur, in what is referred to as an eclipse cycle. A sar is one half of a saros.

May 2004 lunar eclipse

A total lunar eclipse took place on May 4, 2004, the first of two total lunar eclipses in 2004, the second being on October 28, 2004.

June 2012 lunar eclipse

A partial lunar eclipse took place on June 4, 2012. It was the first of two lunar eclipses occurring in 2012, the second eclipse set to happen on November 28. The moon was about one third covered by the Earth's northern umbral shadow at maximum eclipse. The portion of the moon inside the umbral shadow was illuminated by sunlight refracted through the Earth's atmosphere, rendering it much dimmer and with a reddish hue.

A total lunar eclipse will take place on 16 May 2022, the first of two total lunar eclipses in 2022, the second being on 8 November.

A total lunar eclipse took place on April 24, 1986, the first of two total lunar eclipses in 1986, the second being on October 17, 1986.

May 1994 lunar eclipse

A partial lunar eclipse took place on Wednesday, May 25, 1994, the first of two lunar eclipses in 1994, the second being with a penumbral lunar eclipse on Friday, November 18.

A partial lunar eclipse will take place on June 15, 2030.

September 1978 lunar eclipse

A total lunar eclipse took place on September 16, 1978, the second of two total lunar eclipses in 1978.

April 1950 lunar eclipse

A total lunar eclipse took place on April 2, 1950. This was the first total lunar eclipse of Saros cycle 131.

May 1976 lunar eclipse

A partial lunar eclipse took place on May 13, 1976, the first of two lunar eclipses in 1976.

May 1958 lunar eclipse

A partial lunar eclipse took place on May 3, 1958. This was the first partial lunar eclipse of Saros cycle 140. While technically a partial eclipse, the Moon barely clipped the Earth's umbral shadow, which may have been very difficult to observe in practice; though a shading across the moon from the Earth's penumbral shadow should have been visible at maximum eclipse. The partial eclipse lasted for 21 minutes exactly.

A total lunar eclipse will take place on September 19, 2043.

A partial lunar eclipse will take place on June 26, 2048. The Moon will be strikingly shadowed in this deep partial eclipse lasting 2 hours and 39 minutes, with 64% of the Moon in darkness at maximum.

Solar Saros 147
