Thamsanqa Bhekokwakhe Mabhena (1 June 1990) is a South African politician. He is currently the Shadow Deputy Minister of Transport and a Member of Parliament (MP) for the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA).

Political career

In 2008, Mabhena formed part of the establishment of the Democratic Alliance branch in his village in Mpumalanga. [1] He was then appointed the founding DA Youth representative. [1] Mabhena was the transport coordinator of the DA's Dr JS Moroka Constituency for the 2009 general election and became a member of the DA Youth provincial council later that same year. In 2010, Mabhena was appointed as the secretary for the Dr JS Moroka Constituency. [1] He was elected deputy chairperson of the DA Youth in the constituency in 2012. [1]

Mabhena then moved to Gauteng. In 2014, Mabhena was appointed the youth representative of the DA's Hlanganani constituency in Johannesburg. [1] He became the constituency officer of the party's Johannesburg Central constituency and was named the DA's Johannesburg regional coordinator responsible for telecanvassing in 2015. Between 2015 and the August 2016 municipal elections, he was the logistics events coordinator of Herman Mashaba's mayoral campaign. Mabhena was elected as a DA PR councillor in the City of Johannesburg at the elections. [1] He was elected chairperson of the Hlanganani constituency in 2017. [1]

Parliamentary career

Mabhena stood for election to the National Assembly of South Africa at the May 2019 general election as a candidate on the DA's national list. [2] He entered the National Assembly as the DA retained its position as the official opposition. [3] [4] On 5 June 2019, he was appointed Shadow Deputy Minister of Transport. [5] On 2 July 2019, Mabhena nominated Shadow Transport Minister Chris Hunsinger to become chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Transport after saying that it is important that they "have a chairperson with integrity." Hunsinger lost to Mosebenzi Zwane, a former Free State MEC for Agriculture, who is also accused of state capture. [6]

In November 2020, Mabhena called on the national minister of transport, Fikile Mbalula, to "step off Twitter" and deal with his department and the processing of COVID-19 relief funds to the taxi industry. [7] He remained as Shadow Deputy Minister of Transport in the Shadow Cabinet of John Steenhuisen. [8]

Chris Hunsinger

Chris Hunsinger is a South African politician, a Member of the South African Parliament since 2014, Caucus Whip and Treasurer with the Democratic Alliance. He was appointed by the then Leader of the Opposition Mmusi Maimane on 5 June 2019 and retained by the current Leader of the Opposition John Steenhuisen in October 2019 and again in December 2020, as The Shadow Minister of Transport. Hunsinger was re-elected to Parliament on 6 June 2019. He speaks and writes about issues related to consumer and commodity needs in transport, including safety, planning, finance and management with South African road, rail, maritime, and aviation service providers.

Désirée van der Walt

Désirée van der Walt is a South African politician. She has been serving as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa for the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) since 2014. She previously served in the Assembly from 2004 to 2010. She represented the party in the Limpopo Provincial Legislature from 2010 to 2014. Van der Walt has held various leadership positions in the Democratic Alliance and the Shadow Cabinet.

Thomas Walters (South African politician)

Hlanganani Gumbi South African politician

Hlanganani Siphelele Gumbi is a South African politician serving as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa since May 2019. He is a member of the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) and the party's shadow deputy minister for Tourism. He previously represented the party in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature from 2014 until 2019. Gumbi was a councillor of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality between 2011 and 2014.

Ricardo Denver Mackenzie is a South African politician and current Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament for the Democratic Alliance (DA). He became an MPP in May 2014 and was re-elected to a second term in May 2019. Mackenzie had previously served as a Manager/PA to African National Congress Minister Fikile Mbalula. He also serves as the DA's constituency head in Mitchells Plain.

Michéle Clarke South African politician

Michéle Odette Clarke is a South African politician serving as the Democratic Alliance's Shadow Deputy Minister of Public Enterprises since December 2020. She was the Shadow Deputy Minister of Public Service and Administration from June 2019 to December 2020. She was elected to the National Assembly in May 2019. From May 2014 to May 2019, she served as a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature. Clarke was also the ward councillor for Bedfordview until 2014.

Samantha Jane Graham is a South African politician from the Eastern Cape who was elected to the National Assembly of South Africa in the 2019 general election as a member of the Democratic Alliance. Graham has been the party's shadow minister of public works and infrastructure since December 2020. Graham served as the shadow deputy minister of public works and infrastructure from 2019 to 2020. She is a former councillor of the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality.

Cheryl Phillips is a South African politician from the North West who has served in the National Assembly since May 2019. A member of the Democratic Alliance, she has been the Shadow Deputy Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries since December 2020. She was the Shadow Deputy Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy from June 2019 to December 2020. Phillips had previously served as a ward councillor in Rustenburg.

Luyolo Mphithi is a South African politician who has been the Shadow Minister of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities in the Presidency and a Member of Parliament since 2019. A member of the Democratic Alliance, he currently serves as the federal leader of its youth structure.

Tsepo Mhlongo South African politician

Tsepo Winston Mhlongo is a South African politician. A member of the Democratic Alliance, he served as a councillor in the City of Johannesburg until the 2014 national election, when he was elected to the National Assembly of South Africa. After that, he was appointed Shadow Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform. Mhlongo became the Shadow Minister of Sport and Recreation in January 2017 before he was selected to be Shadow Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture in June 2019.

Darren Bergman is a South African politician who has served as Shadow Minister of International Relations and Cooperation since 2019 and has been a Member of Parliament for the Democratic Alliance since 2014. He was Shadow Deputy Minister of Sport and Recreation between 2014 and 2019.
