The 1892 Wellington City mayoral election was part of the New Zealand local elections held that same year to decide who would take the office of Mayor of Wellington for the following year.
The incumbent mayor Francis Bell initially did not intend to stand for a second term. Former mayor John Duthie intended to run in his place, but after commencing his campaign he withdrew owing to illness in his family. After Duthie retired from the contest Bell agreed to run for re-election. [1] The election took place during a period when political partisanship was increasing in local politics. [2] At the beginning of the year Bell had contested a by-election in the City of Wellington electorate for the conservative opposition but was defeated. [3] By contrast Bell's opponent was former mayor George Fisher who was an MP who supported the Liberal Party government. [1]

The Mayor of Wellington is the head of the municipal government of the City of Wellington. The mayor presides over the Wellington City Council. The mayor is directly elected using the Single Transferable Vote method of proportional representation. The current mayor is Tory Whanau, elected in October 2022 for a three-year-term.
Sir William Appleton was a New Zealand local body politician, advertising agent and leading company director. He was Mayor of Wellington for two terms from 1944 to 1950 after serving as a city councillor from 1931 to 1944. He was knighted in 1950.
John Duthie was a politician and businessman in New Zealand. Originally from Scotland, he came to Auckland in 1863. He set up his own ironmongery in New Plymouth, then Wanganui, and he finally settled in Wellington. In the latter city, he was mayor for one term. He then represented Wellington in Parliament for a total of eleven years. For the last two years of his life, he was appointed to the New Zealand Legislative Council.
